After all these threads rugs, and a bad winter. Ive been prowling ebay and cant make my mind up on how many rugs we might need this winter - maybe an excuse for my ever growing rug addiction!!!

Last year we had 200g turnout and 200g stable rug and maybe a fleece as well at night at coldest. my mare is clipped.
However, as its predicted to be even colder im thinking whether i need some more rugs....maybe ....maybe not

Bought a 300g amigo heavy weight a few weeks ago, but it doesnt feel much thicker than my existing medium weight turnout. So trying to decide whether i should get a heavy weight stable as well, so thatd be about 600g of warmth...?

Hmmm what is everyone elses plans this year, im trying to plan ahead, and also try not to spend too much on my addiction to rugs, my horse is better dressed than me!!!!

my pony had a medium weight (220g) turnout on last year & he was out pretty much 24/7 as he didnt have a stable.
this year ive moved him & he has a stable so will have the same rug on him this year, was debating weather or not to get a stable rug but decided not to, as lots of people ive spoken to have said a wet rug will dry quicker if you leave it on him. going to a tack shop sale at the weekend though & if i find another cheap m/w rug i will pick one up, as he is known for ripping rugs! :)

Well you have forced me to confess that I have just put my medium weight winter turnout on my horse - she was cold! BUT we do live in Scotland AND the rug is a bit short and draughty! The temperatures here are varying from 8-14 so it is quite cold at night and she is out.

To answer your question! I think it depends on the horse I have had horses unclipped who would happily live in a rain sheet all winter and in the worst of the winter last year had a 200g on (more for me than them!).

THe one I have just rugged had a mark todd with neck on last winter in the snow - I think it was a heavy weight (300).

If you have necks on I think they do keep a lot of heat in and therefore you may not need as heavy a rug.

Your horse will tell you if its cold but best buy more rugs just in case :D (go on fuel your rug addiction)

Yes a wet rug will dry quicker on a horse, and they soon warm up!!
My stable rug is awesome, its cotton lined, and 1000d water resistant outer, with 200g filling, so the mud just wipes off if the pony does it trick of rolling so mud goes under her rug!!
theyre on offer at the moment at www.ftsrugs.co.uk
Best rug we have, helps if the turnout leaks as well :D

Hoping the weather forecasts arent too accurate though!!!

I would always use a heavyweight in winter, but thats just me. i bought a 400g one last year and it felt really thin but it was really warm. i think its new fibre technologies :) the best thing to do is wait and see how it pans out and then decide if you want to spend your pennies :)
