Do you think a tb will be ok overnight out in a fly rug or rambo protector to be accurate? He's a good weight and not been clipped! All other rugs are ripped, not got time to repair a lw and only got the rug he's wearing that would be ok! It says its going to be 11 tonight!

After reassurance!!!

I'd say he'll be fine (but i'm a cruel mother :D ) My 2 girls have already spent nights out naked; one's full TB and other's 3/4 TB, neither are clipped. They've only been in a rainsheet for over 2 weeks now but were naked a few nights when it was really warm the other week. Even a fly rug will be an extra layer, just to keep the wind off. Chuck him out in it :D

He's been in hw at night up until now but I know will be too hot tonight in it and would rather under rug than over as he'll move about to keep warm just wasnt sure if would be a huge shock to system!! Thanks for making me feel better bout it!

If it isn't meant to rain where you are tonight he should be fine.

Some of mine who are trace clipped have been out without rugs for some time now. They have access to good shelter (which they don't use!). Eating is a good way for a horse to keep itself warm.

I worry more about the stabled horses as they can't move around so much and don't spend the whole night eating.

Personally I wouldn't dream of turning a TB out at night with less than a LW rug on! But that's just me.

I'm a right meany. :P

^ Photo taken 2009, full TB out all the time. She was rugged last winter and this winter as she's now getting elderly but only in a LW or MW (depending on temp) and she's happily naked at the moment. :)

Well after much thought, ended up putting him in his hw!! I have about 14 rugs for this horse, mainly rambo's and everyone except his fly rug and hw are ripped! When I say ripped I mean right through to other side and torn by at least a foot, all courtesy of his field mate!! The only reason his hw is ok is because I repaired it yesterday!! It just threw me as they've forecast it exceptionally warm tonight but from tomorrow it's back to normal!
Therefore I must repair some mw's tonight and lw's!! I can't honestly keep up!! Either that or buy some new ones from Belton tomorrow!! I bought him a rhino a month ago, hw with detatchable neck thinking it may be tougher than the rambos but that lasted a week with a few nicks along it, then eventually one big tear from front to back and right through so you can see his coat!!

I am at my wits end!!!!

I personally feel a HW rug is too much at this time of year on an unclipped horse (unless temperature drops close to freezing). All horses are capable of living without rugs in the wild, where they are probably not as well fed either. A racehorse owner in our village has all his TB youngsters out without rugs most of the winter in quite an exposed field (which I personally wouldn't do or agree with) but they always look fine and well. I think we sometimes compare our own feeling of cold with our horses and forget they are animals with hair, designed to live outside (even hot places like desert regions can get very cold at night and Arabian horses can survive without rugs). I would use a LW rug, just to keep the wind off (and rain if there is any) as 11 degrees is quite mild but keep an eye on the weather as it's always tricky to know what to do for the best at this time of year.

Do you know what I do totally agree but because I had no usable lw i posted on here about the fly rug. Reading some of the posts made me feel cruel so I went against my own instincts!! Every horse is different, even if same breed! I wish now I had stuck with what I intended to do as now I'm worrying he's too hot and can't cool down!!

Hi bumblelion
I wouldn't worry (tho' we all do), he's not going to come to any harm overnight. It's just so difficult to know what to do but I always think they are not going to die if we put the wrong rug on or forget to put any on (unless of course a full combo extra hw 24/7 in a 35 degree summer). He'll be happy as Larry in the morning and so will you when you see he's perfectly ok.

Thankyou!! On the bright side, my stitching leaves something to be desired so he's got plenty of little holes all over rug to allow circulation! LOL!
