What rugs are your stabled horses wearing at the moment?

My horse is stabled quite a bit (but that's another story) and he is still in a middle weight stable rug day and night.

I've heard it is supposed to be going warmer soon and he has lost his winter coat bar some hair under his saddle where he wasn't clipped and I was wondering if he would be warm enough in just a sheet now?

I've got a cold horse and she's not been in rugs either,
dependent on what type he is I'm sure he'll be fine stripped through the day and a sheet overnight if he's particularly chilly - give it a go and maybe pop back in the evening to have a feel of him and see how toasty he feels and whether or not he's comfortable

No rugs.

They are horses and they have hair.

I actually think that we do them no favours with rugs as if they shiver they exercise their skin muscles to keep themselves warm. I wouldn't advocate this in the middle of winter - but it's late May now and I reckon everything should be out without rugs day or night.

Strewth, how cold is it still? It's averaging about 15-20C at NIGHT here. No blankets on anything here right now.

Bedlam, I don't know about letting a horse shiver.
All depends on the horse of course, as always.
I had an arab in Wales that spent most of the summer in a LW at night because he would be shaking (not just shivering) and stary coated in the mornings otherwise. If a horse is shivering to the stage of shaking it's cold, if a horse is cold, tucked up and miserable and I have the power to do something about it then I reckon I am being neglectful not fixing the problem. I put a coat on if I am cold, what's the difference for a horse? If I let my current arab shiver she'd be tucked up and looking as if she'd not been fed for months within hours.

Both my horse's were full clipped in the winter and now they have summer coats, stabled by night with no rugs out by day no rugs. I would never rug an un clipped horse. Thats just me not the law.

My welsh cob is in during the day (don't want her balooning on grass). THe stable block is rather cool - so she wears just a fleece during the day. I have tried her on warmer days without it and when I come back in the afternoon she's tucked up and looking miserable, feels cold to touch. Trying again today, yesterday it was 19 deg C at 4pm, but several degrees cooler in the stable. At night, turned out, wears a med wt rug as it's only about 8 deg C overnight, and often rains.

All of my horses are rugless. 2 live out, 1 is stabled. I will put a very light sheet on if I want to keep them clean or a sun rug in the field to stop my mare burning.

In a middleweight rug when its 6C and under, 7-9C he's in a lightweight. Over 9C and he's in a fleece/waffle rug until its really hot and you sleep on top of the covers with your fan on all night, then he can go naked. He is a WB.

Mine are living out, have been since March 27th.

Two are completely naked, one is in a LW turnout and the other in a lightweight by day, medium weight at night.

I would have thought a stable kept horse would be plenty warm enough naked in the stable at the moment, maybe a very light rug overnight.

Even with all the wind and rain we've had of late where I am, the temperature has been sticking around 10 degrees minimum. It'd feel much warmer in a stable out of the weather.

I cant believe there are still horses in rugs!!! Its nearly June for goodness sake.

Of the 11 horses in our barn only one wears a summer sheet at night and thats because he is old! Everything else is naked and range from welsh section A to clipped out tb's.

The night turn out ones are either nekkid or have on unlined lightweight NZs if the forecast looks really horrible.

Spaniel, we're in north east scotland right on the coast - the winds are vicious here and average SUMMER temps can be about 14 degrees add on a strong coastal wind and it feels a good bit colder. My horses are rugged nearly all year round

I'm in Norfolk, where it's generally milder. My 18 year old TB boy's in a fleece or very thin stable rug at night, depending on how warm it is.

During the day he has a fly rug on or turnout with no fill if it's raining, as he can't cope with rain! He's a real wimp when it comes to being cold, he used to be a show horse and didn't go out if the weather was bad. So he is probably an exception!

My sister's younger Dutch WB is naked and has been for a month or so now.

Im in norfolk aswell, at night the grey mare are in sheets and heavy weight up the neck rugs, not been too hot yet.
During the day usually light weight turnouts or flyrugs but we usually seem to have a chilly wind.

We are in the north east of England, not renouned for it's good weather, and the horses living out have been without rugs for months. The ones who are stabled at night have had lightweights on during the night.

It depends on individual horses, some just feel the cold more than others although there is sometimes an element of anthropomorphism, when owners feel a bit cold so they think their horses do and put on an extra rug!

I'm not getting at anyone here, I just hear so much of this at the stables where I work.

Mine hasn't had a rug on since the beginning of April. It's not 30 below!!! Let his skin breath, overrugging is not good for horses. He is a HORSE, not a naked human!!!! And it's summer for god sake.

Mine have been naked for a while now, need to take the rugs off as early as you can in my opinion , they are horses and do have hair afterall. And if you dont you just end up putting more and more rugs on each year which is not good
