What rugs do I actually need?

my horse runs hot. Lives in a 100g unless it snows most of winter. (irish clip). my horse could probs be naked through march, but a 0g just keeps her a bit cleaner (shes white white) Its still dropping at night to 2/3 here so shes still rocking a 50g atm

Oct - 0g - 50g no neck
Nov - 50g - 100g with neck
Dec -100g
Jan - 100g
Feb 100g- 50g with neck
March - 50g no neck / 0g until the mud dries up
April - nakey til come in next autumn

I could live with :
0g (no neck or neck)
50g (detachable neck)
100g (fixed neck)

200g or a 100g liner for the 100g. (hardly use)

Ive just got a weatherbeeta 50g detachaneck and Most versatile rug Ive owned yet

Get a 1200denier ripstop. buy cheap buy twice with rugs.

Mine was never clipped but I could go through 3 rugs in a week . I had one with no fill, one 50g and one 100g new zealands , then 3 weights of night rug and 4 fly rugs .

I really do think a lot of over rugging goes on in this country UK. Because humans feel cold in damp dark weather we anthropomorphise the feeling to the horses. They are not nesting animals they would not be indoors or under cover naturally and agree that probably biggest problem is when they are stabled and can’t move to get warm.would also say liners can be very dangerous if not attached correctly. Have seen them tangled round legs. Great as long as well fitted. I’m of the school that 350 gram rugs are for north Scotland or arctic!
To be honest even in the near Arctic horses go unclipped and in rugged, but it's much more dry. I feel it's the rain they need protection from

Rain OR wind OR cold temperatures = generally not a problem for an adult healthy horse.

2 or 3 of those together is far less fun for all.

I live in a very exposed area of Scotland. My rugging choices are very different to when I lived on the south coast of England.

Previous horse (blood warmblood, usually clipped out and fit) ran hot and really just needed the rain kept off. Current youngster is, well, rather precious and really not a fan of ‘weather’ so is rugged earlier and heavier. Despite being an unclipped highland x 🙈

I’ve gone between a 0g Rhino, 100g Rambo Duo and a 250g Rhino this winter as appropriate. Plus a 0g neck cover if there is the merest hint of any precipitation.

I’m not so sure form thirty years of being on yards. Seen a lot of over rugging.
This!

I get grief for leaving my yearling (fluffy and unclipped) out during the day in winter naked, you split the fur shes dry and warm. While others get skin conditions from sweating under rugs

Also 100g is far too heavy for a travel rug OP. I have a cooler, but honestly even in october she has to travel naked or she sweats, balancing on a float is a work out for them!

That’s nuts! Healthy Babies should be naked!
