I've an Irish sport horse who i'm thinking about clipping this winter(either hunter clip or trace clip) and i was just wondering what rugs would i need for him? he's just a tiny bit sensitive to the cold. I have a 300g turnout rug with a neck cover, but i was thinking that he might need more. i live in south ireland and normally the local temperature during winter can be anything between -5°C to 8°C.

You need to monitor him once he's clipped and make your own mind up what he needs. Nobody on here can advise you as every horse is different.

One thing I would say though, is that the fact he has a sweet itch rug on during summer will not mean he is 'used to being warm' and will require any more rugging than usual during winter.

Depends on horse and winter that we get. Also having a SI rug on won't make him sensitive to the cold!
My Tb was wintered last year as a hunter clip and never went into anything more than 300gm- he is A chilly horse but we never hit a cold spell last year so managed fine. The prev winter he lived out and had 450g on with just a bib clip- so it does vary!

Ditto what Moomin1 said. Mine are fully clipped in winter and one never wears anything warmer than a 200g rug but another is in 450g

Well, because I have an obsession with rugs I have.....
A standard neck fleece
standard neck 150g
standard neck 220g with 200g detachable neck cover
standard neck 360.

I tend to layer my rugs as it gives more heat but equally you can adjust much more easily.
To be honest it depends on the horse. Both of mine are fully clipped, my Cob gets her coat back within 1-2 months and is rather hot so usually has less heavy rugs than my other horse who is slightly lighter but second horse will get clipped in November and coat won't fully grow out until April!
Just Play by ear, id rather have them slightly cold than too warm and sweating away. :)

depends what his routine is as well! mine live out 24/7 so I always make sure I have 2 of each rug in case they get wet through! 2 light weights, 2 mediums (200g) 2 heavy (300/350g) last year the heavy weights didn't come out of their bags! my then 28yr old mare was fully clipped due to cushings and ring worm! and she was still warm in her medium weights! my then 3yr old was also in a medium and just as warm but had a full winter coat under it!

so every horses is different!

As others have said, it will completely depend on your horse - just keep an eye on him and see how he gets on, and adapt when necessary. My mare is a bit of a sensitive soul when it comes to feeling the cold, however even fully clipped she only tends to wear a 300g, even in the snow, she's always been plenty toasty enough with that. She does have a 450g " just in case" but has only worn it for two days in serious cold, so don't really count that as an essential!
Our TBx usually has a hunter clip in winter, he tends to stay quite warm and usually stays warm enough in a 200g.
