Need to go rug shopping for a new wardrobe but not sure what ones i need. What rugs do you have and can anybody recommend a good brand to fit a idxtb. Thanks

If your horse is more TB'y then Horseware would be great (Rambo, Rhino or the 1200d Amigo are all great rugs). Bucas would also be one to consider.

If your horse is more chunky ID'y then Premier Equine or Shires (I have a Shires Typhoon which is a brilliant rug).

Go for a high denier outer. :)

Barry has:
Summer sheet
Waffle rug
200g stable rug (no neck)
350g stable rug (full neck)
LW turnout (no neck)
100g turnout (detachable neck)
200g turnout (detachable neck)
Heavy weight turnout (no neck).

And I've only had him since may! I've also got a full neck heavyweight turnout on the shopping list.

Premier equine- I have loads of their rugs but starting from scratch I'd have their rainsheet and buy the buster trio set with different weight liners. That should cover all weathers when they need rugging, and if for eg your buster trio got soaked you could leave it to dry for the day and use the rainsheet with a heavier weight liner as substitute :). Clever system, rugs last well, and the design fits well on everything I own (16.1hh ex racer, chunky 16hh ISH, 16.3hh ISH, and 17.1hh WB all get a good fit from PE - in different rug sizes of course!) :). Flysheets however the best I've found are Mark Todd ones. And flymasks Shires seem good fit and value for money.

Were I to be starting from scratch I would buy one of the rugs with a liner system (Rambo and Premier Equine both do this and those would be my brand picks). Definitely cheaper than buying one of everything and then a second no fill as a spare in case the outer rug of my liner system got ripped.

That would be all I would bother with to be honest apart from a cooler and a sheet for travelling

ETS: I am now lolling that I have said EXACTLY what the poster before me said. Almost word for word!

There was a time when I had a billion rugs for every occasion but found that msat of them were rarely if ever used, and took up much needed space in my little barn. I don't bother with indoor/stable rugs very often anymore unless its baltic and they need an extra layer (clipped so sometimes necessary). Mine have two light/mid turnouts and two heavy turnouts each. I tend to stable them in these also as they dry much quicker and saves time in the morning, although they do come off for a while at night either when riding or if not riding for a brush/condition check.

Personally I don't like the full neck turnouts as they've rubbed both my horses' manes out last winter and are only just at pulling length now - the detachable neck rugs are much better, or get yourself an under protector to prevent mane rub. Oh, they also have fleece rugs on for a bit after riding if needed but that's pretty much it.

My standie is heavy TB type build so I find rambo rugs fit his chest nicely without 6ft of overhand round his legs. I always go for 1200Denier as we have a lot of blackthorn in our hedges which makes mincemeat of anything remotely flimsy.

I like the amigo rugs and weatherbeeta. They fit my chunky warm bloods and fine IDx well.

I bought a Rambo rug in a sale once and the stitching fell apart after about four wears. I wasn't impressed.

I am also a fan or premier equine rugs. They do very good sales- have a look at the website, or if you're on FB they do a 10% discount code on their page.

I am a big fan of layering.

Turnouts: I have a no neck no fill, then full neck medium, and full neck heavy.

Stable: sheet, full neck fleece, lightweight no neck, heavy no neck and full neck under rug.

Travel fleece, mesh cooler and fly rug. A few old tatty looking fleeces/sheets for spares.

If you're starting from scratch and don't want to break the bank then I suggest eBay! You can get brand new rugs for half the price
