This is my first winter with my little Dartmoor pony and she's recently been been fully clipped and still out in a 50g standard neck and been find but just wondering what rugs you all use for the majority of the winter and necks or no necks? She's got a cresty neck but isn't fat but wouldn't matter if she lsot a few pounds!
Currnelty using the Gallop Ponie 50g which she did get a bit wet in the other day as only 600D.

I have a no-fill shires that the companion pony (dartmoor) wears when clipped if the rain is relentless, but I am clipping her to loose weight, if she was the right weight I would alter rugs depending on how she felt- how warm they feel around the base of the ear gives a better idea of how they doing are than popping a hand under the rug.
I generally stick to the principle that they are generally better too cold than too hot (within reason!) so as long as they aren't shivering and/or difficult to keep weight on I tend to leave them in a lighter weight or unrugged if out of work (I will freely admit to popping a no-fill on any that are in work as it saves a great deal of hassle having a clean and dry pony!).
They can always move around to warm up, sweating under their rugs if the weather is unusually clement can't be hugely comfortable.
ETA- she has been blanket and hunter clipped before and I've never put a neck on her rug, as she has plenty of mane to keep the worst of the wet off!

My native is hunter clipped and spent most of last winter in a 0g. Went up to a 50g for cold or v.wet and windy days and on v.v cold days he was in a 100g.

I only put a neck cover if v.wet/windy or v. cold but that's more to protect his mane from being lost through rubbing.

My dartmoor - who came off of the moors itself! Is a complete and utter woose. I've had him since he was 3yo. He is 21yo now and every winter gets a 450g full neck turnout on. He isn't clipped and he isn't ridden. He is just a complete and utter pansy. He will stand shivering in a summer shower when it's 20⁰ temperature so you can imagine what he would be like in winter 🙄

The shires rugs are great, total converts here!! If he’s chunky then the highlander range would probably best fit, tempest are great too but better for narrow horses.. but worth trying. We’ve had the 0 fill and the 50g so far and they have been bone dry even after total deluges!!! The proofing on them is very impressive
