When I turned my horse out this morning it was 1 degree so I just put his duo with 100grm liner on, by the time i'd mucked out he was sweating (hes a really hot horse) so I took it off and hes now naked (hes hunter clipped) he was perfectly warm when I left and my car said 12 degrees.
This made me wonder because a lot of the horses were turned out early this morning when it was freezing in heavyweights so they must be boiling by the time they come in tonight!
so i just wondered what you do on days like this? (freezing over night then warm in the day)

Mine is still in her full neck rambo heavyweight, but its breathable, I've taken her fleece off and shes a bit of a wus anyway. She's not clipped but doesn't exactly have a massive winter coat. She'll be alright, rather her be too hot than two cold, and she lives out so doesn't get her rugs changed all the time.

Mine were naked yesterday, heavyweights off lastnight, lightweights on today, heavyweights back on tonight.

One is out in a Rambo mediumweight half-neck, and the other in a Fal mediumweight full neck. Both rugs are breathable which I think is the best thing when the weather swings between extremes in the course of a day.

Cairo and Chancer are in MW amigo rugs - apart from a couple of really cold days when they had a fleece on underneath that is all they have worn this winter. Both are chaser clipped but with the bum left on.

At night when down to 0 they have 350 HW rugs on and if below that I will add a fleece. Chancer has had a fleece on under his rug this week as he was full clipped last week ready for showing.

I prefer my horses to be slightly cool rather than over warm - they itch their tails if they get too warm.

Mine are stuck inside (but move to new livery yard on Friday with turnout TG!) but are nicely naked. They've got medium weight stable rugs on at night but I leave the necks down as neither are keen on them. Both are arabs - one has a full clip and other no clip but doesn't really grow a winter coat.

If they were out in the field today they'd either be naked or with the lightest weight TO on just to keep the mud off!

My 19yr tb mare...is in lightweight with no neck...she is not clipped and jet black...she does tend to get warm...her field does shade over quite a bit during afternoon tho...
Did have a teeny weeny thought about which rug this morning as there was a hard frost and cold but it is soooooo much better than rain!!!...and the sun was already out and we have lovely blue sky now too.
She was shaking her head in her field yesterday cos of the midges being about...roll on summer...(already thinking of fly repellent and fly masks!

Most of the horses at my yard are naked this morning. I waited until about 10am (I love half term) to go up and take her mw off. I had a quick feel underneath her rug and she was roasting, much happier with it off even though she has a blanket clip

Mine has a heavy weight at night and put his middleweight on. He was a bit sweaty yesterday though so gonna be roasting today, poor boy. If this continues, its his Fal lightweight I think. He is clipped

i put mine out in HW this morning, I'm just going up in a mo to change into a lighter rug, or my just bring him in as there is nothing on the fiels for him to eat.He has been out since 6.45 this morning and it was sooooo cold.

My two unclipped live out mares have been naked the last two days and again today. Back in HWs overnight though. J was naked yesterday and day before when I could take rugs off at about 11 am and put back on at about 4, but back at work today so borrowed a rambo duo outside bit from a friend, and put that on at 8am before work. He's fully clipped so thought he would be a bit chilly without it at 8am....it was -1! I'd much rather mine were a bit chilly than too warm, at least they can move around to warm up, nothing they can do to cool down! Biggest mare gets very hot very easily as well.
THink I might have to invest in some MW rugs at this rate, I only have heavy ones or rainsheets.

My TB and sisters gelding have had LWs on in the day and MWs at night the last couple of days. Colder today though so have left my lads MW on. Welshie is naked as usual - has been all winter.

My horse is hunter clipped but he is in at the moment. He is in a HW stable rug with full neck he usually has a LW under it but that has come off now. At night though he has 2 HW's on as with the sky being so clear it goes really cold at night.

None. naked as the day he was born. He shouldn't have trashed his only rug should he, guess he didn't like purple

Naked today. She had her lightweight on yesterday and sweated. She looks beautiful out with no rugs on and has had a right old time tanking around and rolling.

She'll have a lw stable rug on in a bit when I go back to the yard.

I'd rather she be too cold than too hot. It's easier for her to warm herself up than cool down if she's hot and sweaty.

Mine are out naked. They come in at night and 22 yr old pony has middlewight stable rug on. My boy has a cooler rug on. Both unclipped.

I wait for the worst of the frost to go before turning out.

Naked yesterday but cooler today and she is in very lightweight "mackintosh". I can't get her in until late and it will be really cold again I think, so difficult to get the balance right. I don't want her getting cold as she might arse around a bit and I don't want her tweaking her poorly leg.
