What rug is your horse wearing at the moment?

My unclipped, thin skinned wb is wearing a meduimweight turn out day and night. He has got a very fine coat.

When I clip him next weekend he will wear a heavyweight turn out, day and night - until it gets really cold, when I will put 2 rugs on him.

That is about the level of my rugging system...I have had to tone down the way I rug as he rips his rugs off (even fully clipped in winter)

In contrast, the unclipped and overweight exmoor x pony opposite is wearing neck to toe fleece, thermatex, and a polywarm.

Do you think we have a tendancy to over rug...and would your horse get cold if you took one off?

Ditto.

Lance has a lightweight sheet on just to keep him clean because he is a mud moster.

If I took Beau's rug off he would look more or less instantly drop weight!

George is unclipped and has a bit of a coat but not really fluffy. He is out naked during the day and has a 110g stable rug on at night. He is being clipped tomorrow (just a bib/belly clip) and will then be turned out in a 110g turnout. I have 200g turnout and stable rugs for when it's really cold.

All of mine are unclipped and live out. Three in lightweight turnouts and one in a mediumweight (but only because the LW is awaiting repair). To be honest, all but the oldest mare don't really need them, but does help keep them clean enough to ride

.

Meg is blanket clipped, and is in a LW stable rug at night. I changed her TO to MW on Tuesday because the temperature has really dropped up. I don't own any HW rugs, I'd rather layer with a fleece at night, and mine aren't out for long enough during the day to get cold.
I don't think I overrug, but I know a lot of the horses on our yard have too many rugs on, and are frequently sweaty in the mornings. I worry about the weight of all the rugs on their backs as well

My horse drops weight easily in the winter so I have to keep him warm but there are some people down the yard who rug up really early so their horses end up looking like the Michelin man when the weather turns really cold.

He is fully clipped (except legs) and is in a middleweight with a thin fleece underneath when he is out during the day and over night he is in a quilted under rug with neck and a light/middle weight quilt.

Both mine have the same clip which is a modification trace with their necks all out, mine are out in the day and in at night, they have MW wugs on then at night their thick stable rugs, last week when it was warmer they had lightweights on in the day and the thin padded stable rugs. They aren' t sweaty of uncomfortably warm.

My ned drops weight easily and is waiting to be clipped, so at the mo hes got a MW on. Yesterday he had his other MW (only has fillet string) but it broke with the high wind and it ended up over his head and he got soaked and really cold

. Today I had to drag him to the field, but I told him it was OK coz hes got his other rug with proper leg straps

My stabled mare is in a fleece overnight and a lightweight during the day. She is clipped.

My broodmare and foal are living out - mare has a rug on at night only. Foalie is naked.

There are a lot of horses with MWs and HWson at my yard and I do wonder what they will do when it actually gets cold.

That said, each to their own. The owners know the horses and if that's what they want to do then fair enough. They probably all think I am cruel cos my horses are often naked....

My pony has a full clip, and is in a LW turnout during the day and a fleece at night. The forecast says it will get a lot colder tonight so he'll be wearing a MW stable rug, and probably a MW turnout tomorrow.

Good grief, poor little bugger he must be sweltering. What will they do in the depths of winter when it's really cold?

Mine are both native, clipped out except for legs. The hairball has a light/med weight turnout, the mardy mare is slightly more delicate and I've just bought her the nice new Orican with neck. They're currently both out at night but will be in by Christmas.

Osc has been in a MW in the field but is now in a HW, HW in the stable during the day and 2 HW's over night. He will be chaser clipped at the wknd. People may say I over rug but I couldn't careless, I know my horse and I know what he needs. He drops weight very easily, feels the cold and I'd challenge anyone to get on him when he's cold!!

Dexter drops weight and feels the cold - he is fully clipped and he has a heavy weight turnout neck rug. And in the stable he has a heavyweight neck rug and a fleece when its real cold he will have a neck duvet underneath the heavy weight.

Spider is a good doer really she is fully clipped and has a heavy weight neck in the stable and turned out. She will just have fleeces underneath for when its colder.

And Cruz still has a full coat! So she has a rainsheet in the day and a summer sheet at night to keep poop off of her!

Well up until Monday Leg was in MW TO with neck in the day and LW stable rug but he is normally a warm horse. Since hes been poorly he has been cold and so is in his HW stable rug without neck. In deepest winter he will have a under-rug on with his stable rug. He has hunter clip.

I was wondering if I've been a cruel mummy as all the other horses at the yard (clipped or not) have been in full neck HW's and I too wonder what they will do in the depths of winter - by the looks of things they could be mistaken by michelin men

Pride is currently in a MW and duvet in the stable. He will change to a HW and duvet in the next few week when he is clipped again;

ETS: Should have mentioned P is fully clipped as in NO HAIR AT ALL

[/ QUOTE ] Just out of interest, what will he wear when he is clipped and it gets colder?

Archie is fully clipped - he went out for the first time today in his HW turnout which is 450g. The wind here today is freezing and there is no shelter in his little paddock which is on top of a hill, its bl00dy cold up there!!

At night hes only in his MW which is around 250g with a quilt underneath. He wont go in his HW at night for a while yet as his stable stays nice and warm.

Bloss is VERY woolly, and is naked during the day and just wears a thin fleece at night. (Shes pregnant tho, so shes not really being rugged)

Ours all live out, the brood mare has a light weight on as I don't want her losing condition. The two boys, one unclipped and one clipped trace, were naked until this morning, they were stuck right into the hedge and looked a little chilly, so the clipped one (traditional cob) has a rainsheet on, and my unclipped 15 year old has his old Rhino medium weight, which is so old it's gone flat and is probably a light weight now! They will get more weighty rugs as I clip. I normally clip out and rug up in a heavy weight, they still live out 24/7 no matter what the weather though! The pic is from a couple of years alo, the skewbald is mine, he was hunter clipped at this point, and still in the medium mentioned above!

TGM, our horses don't go out during the winter, so he will be stabled 24/7 shortly. When it gets colder (overnight) I will take off one of the HW's and replace it with a sheet and a duvet (king size!) as this is both warmer and lighter for him to wear.
I will add that my pony is naked and out 24/7. If a horse doesn't need the rugs I won't put them on, it's just that he does! The YO used to think I was a bit mad I'm sure, until the grooms had left him with next to nothing on one cold day and she witnessed me try to get on him. She now understands him like i do!

my girly is in a HW full neck TO and a HW full neck stable! she's also fully clipped! she feels the cold and in the depths of winter she will either have a fleece on or if its really cold and underrug! most people at the yard have just started bringing in and the unclipped horses don'have rugs on.where my gilry has been in at night for about 1 month but only started rugging since she got clipped!

My trace clipped welsh/thoroughbred cross is in his MW turnout, with his MW Stable rug at night. He lives in the NE of Scotland and I'm saving the HW gear for January/February when it generally gets a lot colder here. In my experience horses are able to cope with cold (and snow), it's the wind and the rain that really makes them suffer.

My WB is fully clipped and wears a 350g TO in the day and a HW stable rug a night. When it's cold he will wear an under-rug with a full neck in his stable and a fleece under his outdoor if it's really cold!

My TB is unclipped and wears a LW stable rug and a MW TO as she really feels the cold.

Our welsh B's all thin furred for a native, blanket clipped, out in the day in at night have middle weight full neck rugs (stable and turnout). Pip who has the hair of a shetty, blanket clipped, full neck MW turnout and no neck MW stable rug. Ginga, who has a thinner coat but is rather rotund has the same as Pip and the Shetland and welsh A and cob all out 24/7 unrugged unclipped.

Mines unclipped and in a lightweight(no padding) Rambo excel with hood today because it's really chucking it down and she gets grumpy if she gets cold and wet,
wink.gif

She's only been rugged up for the last few days.

Cropi lives out 24/7 and has no set rugs it depends on each day. Today she has a thin underug and a m/w with neck as its bitterly cold and blowing a gale. Last night she had on a thin underug and a h/w. She has been in just a m/w during the day and a m/w combo at nght. I am still struggling to get weight on her and she really feels the cold. All horses are different, like people, some feels the cold and some don't so I don't think that there should be any right or wrong with rugging. As long as your horse doesn't sweat then its ok. JMHO

Spider who's on box rest at the mo & not clipped is in a MW (200g) with hood.
Q on the other hand is fully clipped & this week has gone into his HW (400g) with hood. If it warms up again he'll go back into his MW.
It's a pain but I just check the forecast & adjust accordingly.

My mare is fully clipped legs and all is out in a m/w rhino wug ( 220g i think) in the day and has a thermatex under a lightweigt stable rug ( 150g amigo ) overnight. We have very little shelter in the field but she is plenty cosy enough. She is in medium work ( as in 6 days a week bit of hacking bit of schooling bit of jumping and competing every other weekend) and is ID x.
