What rugs is your horse in?

Mine is unclipped but will be clipped next week. He is normally naked but had a lightweight T/O on today because it is so foul. When he is clipped he will have light or medium weight rug on. He is in at night.

solo is out today wearing his HW combo. at night he wears his HW stable rug and a LW under rug.
he has a very high blanket clip.
red is out today in his MW combo. at night he is wearing a HW stable rug and a fleece. he is fully clipped.

my stables are very open and drafty, and the fields have no shelter.

mine arent over-rugged - if they were theyd be sweaty under their rugs.

Mine is in a MW Amigo atm and i will use his rhino plus when it gets really cold. He gets very warm if overrugged despite being a TB

all out 24/7 - 365 days, all unclipped, still naked..
will put on half neck MW around beginning of dec, then full neck for coldest part... then back to MW for getting slightly warmer but wet season.. then naked again

At this very moment he is unrugged. Last night he had his mw fullneck on, it was bitterly cold last night, freezing north wind. The night before was a normal neck mw, as it was milder. He won't get any heavier than a mw until he's clipped (although he's a tiny bit clipped, and then my clippers broke

my boy is fully clipped. at the mo he is in an amigo MW (200g) with neck in the day, and 250g combo quilt at night.
we are on dartmoor and it hasnt been that cold yet, no frosts, and the stables are really sheltered so he is plenty warm enough.

To those that are already turning out in a HW rug, what do you do when it actually gets cold? Do you put a duvet under the HW?

Mine is fully clipped, she is out in a L/MW with a neck. She is in at night, but not in a stable, in a big open pen which is really no warmer than being out. She has on a MT under-rug with a neck (that refuses to stay done up) and a 110g stable rug over top. She is very much warm enough. When the weather gets worse she will have a MW overtop of the under-rug at night and a fleece under the MW TO to go out - but only if the temp is in the minus figures.

Josh is now out in a H/W Rhino Plus during the day, and has a Weatherbeeta under rug (with integral neck cover) plus Amigo stable rug at night. This is an attempt to stop him growing his coat back after being clipped, as he needs full vet sedation for clipping!

If/when it gets colder he can have a fleece-type rug under his turnout and a duvet under his stable rugs if really necessary - he is a SF but looks quite TB - haven't had him through the winter yet so will just have to monitor how he looks

Ours are all still out 24/7 for the first time ever, usually they are in and clipped from a fortnight ago but there is still grass and its still dry so they are still field kept ponies!

Up until 2 nights ago, Asti with her bun in the oven was in a MW, as was neurotic and aging TB, but its turned really cold so both now have a v thin (4oz) stable rug under the MW's. Need to keep weight on TB and Asti is spoiled rotten...

Once the weather really turns they will be in on a night, clipped, and up to HW

Ivy spawn of satan is totally unrugged but she has the coat of a polar bear/sheepskin - somewhat similar to those fireside rugs you get!

She will go into a LW once it gets muddy...

my TB mare is in a mw turnout when out and mw stable rug.

when it gets colder, she will have HW with neck rugs, if really, really cold, then a HW.

I do not like over-rugging, especially as she has a tendancy to have mad half hours in the field.

My oldie cob and my PBA live out all year so have mw with fleeces under when v.cold as they grow very thick coats. They are rugged to keep dry more than anything.

My mud monsters are in l/w turnouts as they are fat and unclipped, currently they are living out. Last year they lived out in medium weight rugs all winter.

Bertie 27 year old chap, wears Weatherbetta Orica combo in the field 360g and Derby House 350g stable rug. (unclipped)

Winston fully clipped Weatherbetta Takka heavy weight NZ 400g and Mark Todd heavy weight stable rug combo 400g.

Snoop fully clipped weatherbeeta Orica heavy weight NZ 360g and Mark Todd heavy weight stable rug combo 400g.

The above two will have extra fleece when it gets colder.

Osc has been in a MW in the field but is now in a HW, HW in the stable during the day and 2 HW's over night. He will be chaser clipped at the wknd. People may say I over rug but I couldn't careless, I know my horse and I know what he needs. He drops weight very easily, feels the cold and I'd challenge anyone to get on him when he's cold!!

They're all different aren't they

My girl is a strapping young teen unclipped yet fine coated WB /CB/TB BUT she detests getting cold and wet.

My late full TB mare was far more tough and hardy and it was only in her very late twenties that she started to drop condition in winter hence I brought her warmer rugs( she always had oodles of hay in the field anyway to provide her central heating LOL)

My fully clipped horse is in a middleweight stable rug at night time, and I have only just put his m/w turnout rug on yesterday for the first time, he's been in a Bucas smartex lightweight up till now.
He is a very warm horse, last night I put a fleece under his stable rug and he was so hot I took it off again!
