how strict/relaxed is your yard? rules etc.

and do you also have a contract?

oh and a 2nd part - if you were a YO what rules would you have and enforce?

we do have a contract with the yard.

Rules are:

pick up poos in the school after use
If using jumps put them away
If you break a pole when not in a lesson you pay for it
NO riding without a hat
Hats must be worn when catching/turning out
Hats must be worn for lunging
All horses must be wormed when specified in livery book
No Smoking

Our yard is pretty relaxed. Can only use the loose school for 30 mins at a time at busy times, if you put on the board you are having a lesson people can't used the big school at the same time. And pick out your horses feet before leaving the stable or sweep up your mess. Other than that we are pretty much left to our own devices.

Oh, don't have a contract but there is a one month notice period for leaving.

Horse is kept on a private yard owned by a friend and as horse is hers (I have him on loan from her) - there are very few rules, just common sense

Things like field rotation, worming and so on is done by common sense, discussions and mutal agreement.

No contract.

Still trying to work out what the rules are as they are TOP SECRET and you only find out what they are if you break one!

Rules I would have if YO:

No smoking
No parelli
No purple / pink equipment
No lungeing at 30 mph on 10metre circles
No vest tops or skimpy shorts to be worn by anyone with BMI > 30

we dont have many either
main ones being :
*worming plans
*clean up after yourself
*tidy jumps away once finished with
general common sense

and we dont have a contract either

Hardly any rules on our yard - its described as 'relaxed' - but sometimes it ends up in a right mess and it does my head in!!!!

New rule as of last week - if you dont empty wheelbarrows then whoevers stable it is next too you get charged £3 - its like musical wheelbarrows now!

Previous yard had a contract and a whole book of rules (I kid you not) and it was a rubbish yard, a complete lack of common- and horse-sense.

Now on a yard with no contract (awaits beating!) and no set rules, and it is fantastic - people engage their brains and use their common sense and it works really well. If our YM has any problems about a particular issue she can just have a quiet word.

- Off the yard by 10pm latest (preferably 9.45pm so the YO can go round and check all the horses)

- Pick up poo in school/on yard after use

-Keep all gates shut

-Keep tack room and common room door shut and locked if not in use

-Tidy up and brush up after yourself

-Keep any jumps/equipment tidied away after use.

All common sense and courtsey really.

I really like the yard I'm at, it's got enough rules to keep everything in order, but not too many, so it feels like a relaxed place to be.

The main rules are:
- if you want to put up more than 2 jumps in the school you have to book the school (for £3 an hr)
- clear away jumps/games equipment after use
- if you're going to be coming down to the yard late at night (or coming back from a show really late etc) let YOs know so they know why the dogs are barking!!
- worm on designated days and keep all horses in for 24 hrs afterwards

We have a brief contract with contact details etc.

From outward appearence our yard is quite strict but we don't have a rule book as such.
The yard is always immaculate. The tack is always generally sparkling (I clean mine after each ride just for a quite life). The school is harrowed 4 times a week and we take it in turns. We cut all our field with the tractor and spray weeds. I'm just about to re paint the inside of the stables.

I really love the yard, I'm naturally really untidy but there everything has its place and thats where you can find it

I keep one of my horses at a livery yard as we don't have a sandschool (yet) and the livery yard is next door practically to our farm, so makes sense just to use theirs. Their rules;

-Clear up jumps and droppings from school after use
-Keep area outside stable swept and tidy
-Always lock tackroom after use
-Keep main gate closed if you are alone on yard

Not really 'rules' as such but other things we do
-write in the diary when we want to use school
-keep fields poo-picked in summer

On our yard at home my rules are;
- All horses must be vaccinated and wormed up to date
- Yard and fields to be kept tidy (poo-picked, swept etc)
- No smoking
- No running on the yard/around the horses
- No unsupervised children

Our yard owner is very hands off and we have no rules, other than he doesn't like people driving on the grass in wet weather!
On the plus side, we can come and go as we please and have no restrictions on turn out etc and we work out things like field allocation amongst ourselves. We also have a board for messages and to reserve the school for lessons.
However, sometimes I think we could do with a few rules such as picking up poo from the school, controlling your dog and emptying wheelbarrows after use.

My yard has about 2 rules:
No stealing extra hay for your horse without paying £2
Clean poo up from the arenas

I'd say it's pretty relaxed, some people ride without hats and ride around bareback but I think they're a bit insane.

We have to rake the school every time we use it. It was a huge shock at first but im pretty much used to it now. Apart from that its a relaxed yard with common sense rules.

Leave area tidy
Horses to be visited every day - winter and summer
no smoking
Clean up after your horse in menage if neccesary
No loose dogs

Mostly common sense me thinks

Our yard supposedly has no rules (until you do something the YO diesn't like!) and no contract.

We have unwritten rules like picking up poo from the schools and generally clear up after youself. Its an all DIY yard of about 30 horses so if someone doen't clear up the school etc you often dont know who it was anyway - rather frustrating when people cant follow 2 very simple rules.

Our YO is way too nosy for her own good and has never really ridden but takes it upon herself to tell certain people they are doing things wrong! It drives me mad!

My yard doesn't have any real rules but its only a small diy yard (10 horses) and we all get on well, I love my yard! We have a strict worming programme and we all fill up the waters in the field, common sense really, and we keep the place tidy. Its more unsaid rules than anything else, we always borrow things off each other but always give them back so its not like we're stealing things from each other. Its really nice to be on an adult-only yard I couldn't stand to have bratty children with ponies everywhere.

People that don't visit their horse for 2 or 3 days, do not treat their mite infestation to the point that they get maggots
crazy.gif
and leave it with a severe lice population are rewarded with extra grazing and a free turn out and rug changing service.

New owners that are known to the yard owner are given rested paddocks and larger stables for their smaller horses

No worming regime

Owners and the favoured owners horses are allowed to graze the grass schooling and jumping paddocks which has resulted in horses being led through being kicked by the loose ones

Existing owners that care for their horse are given tiny, ragwort infested paddocks that are far away from the stables

You must tie your horse up to it's stable due to health and safety but it's fine to leave gates open and to smoke anywhere including the stable OMFG

Needless to say I am moving

(I'll point out that the severely neglected horses mites and lice were treated by myself and another owner and not the horses owners or the yard owner.Disgusting place
mad.gif
. I didn't ask enough questions when I viewed and should have looked around all the paddocks before moving there)

No parelli. (or I will have to kill you)
Please leave the tap as you find it (don't take the bloody spray end off to wash your horse so that every single night I have to replace it to water my plants)
No loose dogs. (I am fed up with picking up sticks your dog abandons which break my lawn mower blades.)
Other than that mostly don't use my equipment and sweep up after yourself.
Liveries can buy anyone else's hay/feed use any farrier/vet I don't think it's any of my business.
This is by the way a tongue in cheek post, my liveries are actually brilliant!

Officially the best yard rules ever! I'm going to sugeest them to the YO tonight

I'm the YO. All liveries have contracts, so the rules are in there.

No smoking in the buildings
No dogs (we're a sheep farm aswell)
Put jumps away after use
Pick any manure up that your horse leaves
Must poo pick at least once a week
Keep area in front of stable tidy

Just common sense really, I have rules but it is still relaxed. I can't understand how anyone can enjoy keeping their horse where they there are hundreds of rules.
