Hi, I will be starting my little 2 1/2 year old son on my 12h pony after xmas, was just wondering if there are any specific saddles that you have used or any accesories/gadget that you have used to assist children learning to ride.

I already have a "cub" saddle with the handle that I am going to use.

A friend has said that you can get something that is attatched to the seat that helps to keep the child in place?? any body know of that?

Im just really concerned that he might slip out the side door, I have already had him on a pony but had people either side of him and me leading but thats going to be a nightmare to find two other people free at the same time when he wants to ride.
There are no smaller ponies that I can use, the only other option would be to buy a shetland (but then I would have 4 horses so not really an option)

I just would like to know any thing you may know of or have used and can recommend?

my daughter used grass reins on her pony she found it much safer as her mare couldnt put her head down and pull her out of the saddle all the time. as soon as your son feels comfy he wont want a handle on a saddle he will want the reins like mummy and end up on the floor when pony gets pekkish lol they worked wonders and she still uses the handle on the d rings on her normal saddle now hope its helpfull

My son learned on a cub safari, they are really good.
If you can walk next to him and pony will walk on its own you can be ready to grab him as he comes out the side door, but they do balance very well really. My lil pone was very spooky so small boy was quite often dangling from my hand!

yes, i've seen that saddle 'inky dinky' it's about £400 I believe... far too much money for what it is.

I used a cub saddle when mine were tiny and it did the job perfectly well. If you've something quiet and sane you can trust it to plod next to you and use your spare hand to steady the child. In an emergency i'd always just scoop my arm round their back (under the arms) and pull them free.
Put a headcollar over the bridle and attatch the reins to that, so when he is ready to learn steering he's not pulling on her mouth. He can be just like mummy

just looked at the saddles and yeah £400, I know you cant put a price on safety but thats a little out of budget atm, think I will just be doing a lot of grabbing lol.

I have had pony for 22 years so know her well still full of beans but is a plod with a novice and will be good for my son but was just a bit worried what people would say me putting a 2 year old on a 12hh and not a shettie or something a bit smaller
