Hi guysss,
basically. I have just brought a 5 year old. She is ridiculously unbalanced and quite green so I'm trying to find a saddle for her. She was previously in a wintec which i HATE, they're so uncomfortable and I feel like they are tipping up?
I was thinking a thorowgood? I know they're cheap but I do want a leather one in the future as I'm not to keen on synthetic, although the T6 looks pretty nice and looks a lot more like leather, you can't even tell the difference really.
Anyway, does anyone know of any VERRRRY light leather saddles? or good synthetic saddles that won't mess up my horses back?
Thanks guys, sorry for the essays but do say what you think:)
Thanks so much.

I just put a normal leather saddle on mine from the start, it was an Ideal saddle and not very heavy at all. Maybe try looking at older Ideal saddles?

get a saddler out to fit her. buy the best fit you can afford. be prpared to change it in 12 to 18 months as the horse develops. talk to your local saddler. personally i hate wintec and thoroughgood. buy a good english leather saddle that fits.

yesss, will definately get the saddler out :) yeah this is why i may go for a rubbish synthetic one while her body shape changes. Are you sure she won't struggle with a leather one?xxx

was your's really unbalanced and green when you put a leather saddle on her? didn't find it any more difficult? my ones quite big boned and strong so i don't know?xxx

I ride a horse for someone who has a thorowgood t6. Theyre really comfy. I like my synthetic which changable gullets for young horses as theyre always changing shape :)

I would just have your saddler out an see what fits - you might have a big choice, and you might not! The thorrowgoods really are good (and I am a total leather saddle snob!) so def worth a go if the tree shape suits her. Also see what good quality second hand english leather saddles your saddler has. She'll grow out of it in time, but a good second hand or good condition thorrowgood will both hold their value well so you can then just use the £ towards her next saddle. No reason at all that a leather saddle would be worse on her back, although the leather adjustable ones can be rather heavy. That said, the weight really isn't that important. A well fitting saddle, with nice broad panels for weight bearing, which has been recently flocked with pure wool (don't get synthetic flocking!) is much more important. Compared to a rider the weight of a saddle pales into insignificance.

She wasn't unbalanced at all, had never had a synthetic saddle on her so couldn't say if she found it more difficult, but she didn't have any problems with having a leather saddle straight off.

There are leather adjustable saddles available. GFS do a range with the XCH system of gullets and the panels are flocked and lined with recovery foam. A friend has just bought one and loves it. www.gfsriding.co.uk.

Kent and Masters also do adjustable leather saddles.

I've looked at both saddles at my local saddler and they don't feel heavy.

Would you say I could use the shires optimus york saddle on her? Also she's a bright bay so which colour would you go for? I really like the havana one.
So leather shouldn't be a problem? It also has a changeable gullett system but as you say the weight of the saddle shouldn't be a problem?xxx

No idea if you could use a particular saddle on her, that really needs your saddler to see it on her. I always pic havanah if leather, but if you go synthetic, the black does tend to look better.
Good luck shopping!

I'm thinking the shires optimus york in havana? I changed my mind over night haha! Do you think it would clash with her coat?
She's like a beautiful strong coloured bright bay but quite bronzy?xxx

I love havanah on every colour tbh! OH mare is a gorgeous bright bay and used to be in havanah (perfect!), but he got all trendy and when he got his new jump saddle he got it in black, I was gutted!
Also the perk with havanah is that if you choose to do a bit of showing with her then it is the 'correct' colour.
Sometimes you might have a wait from your saddler for a saddle in havanah as they tend to stock alot in black, but if that doesn't bother you and the saddle fits well, then havanah sounds a good choice!
