What saddle do you have your wide ponies in? Looking for a Sec D

I have been searching the internet for days now for saddle advice but still can't make up my mind. I need something GP for a Section D with little/no wither. Preferably I want something leather not synthetic but will go down that route if I have to as don't have a massive budget! What saddles do people have their wide ponies in? Also any makes you would stay clear of? I want to try and get something secondhand on eBay if possible. Have seen a m&j GP that may be suitable but don't know anything about this brand, never really heard of it.

Many thanks :)

I have a thorowgood T8, it's half leather and half synthetic but looks like a leather saddle and is nice and lightweight :)

My friend's D is in a black country. I'm currently in the process of trying to save up for one for my connie. Not sure what he's in at the moment as it's an old one from a friend. He was in a native pony saddle which was amazing but unfortunately the sod changed shape!

I have a very wide 17hh IDxSecDxTB and he's in an Ideal too. I love it. Also have an Ideal for my slightly narrower IDx something. I think they're great saddles, so comfy for horse and rider

Thorowgood T6 for mine - Thorowgoods and Kent&Masters seem to fit the fatties (sorry - round-ies) particularly nicely I find. I do enduranace to the T6 is the perfect mix between needing minimal care but looking like leather for me ;-).

I have my eye on an ideal, a saddler I've spoken to has suggested the H&C version but that particular version is a bit out of my budget! Also heard good things about Kent & Masters with the adjustable gullet which is obviously handy, my mare does tend to change shape...again have my eye on the Kent & Masters Cob but these seem to go for a lot secondhand as there aren't very many about!

OldNag I had saddle fitter out but he wasn't too helpful to be honest. A girl at my yard happened to have a Wintec Cob that was fitted with purple gullet that fit my mare and he tried that on her and said to get one of those because it fit and that was that...but after riding in it I really didn't like it so didn't buy one of those! Have a new saddler coming out but she doesn't have much in the way of second hand so said if I can find something she will come out and see if it fits...as I know roughly the size I am looking for now, but obviously all saddle makes are different :)

will be watching this thread as I have a welsh sec c that im struggling with...

Ive been told same, thorowgood cob or kent and masters but all the cob models seem to go for a lot/quickly especially as I need 16.5" which doesnt seem common size

I use a bates wide saddle on my Connemara. He's in the 2XW gullet plate and with the shims you can alter it more than just the width. The difference in my boy is amazing.

Have had a total nightmare tryng too get something for our welsh d. The Thorowgood cob t6 is not flat enough at the back. The wintec just doesn't fit.
In the end, a friend let me borrow a fixed gullet Thorowgood griffin, which is approx 9.5" wide in the front of the gullet( not d to d) and it fits perfectly.
I also have an,older Ideal, again 9.5 " in the gullet which we use for showing.
Have been through more saddles up to that point than most people have hot dinners!

My Section D is also in a Bates Wide. It is completely adjustable and as the saddler is at the yard so often, I have him check it every 2 months or so - and it always needs a small adjustment - either the gullet or shims or both. Great saddle.

I have my wide Haflinger and very very wide New Forest x in Saddle Company saddles. Leather, £200 - £300 second hand, very comfy, nice looking and can be adjusted from narrow to VERY wide by a Saddle Company (NF was xxw in Wintec and there is still scope to go wider)

I ended up winning the bidding for a wide Ideal tonight so I am PRAYING to the lord that this one fits or I may just never want to see a saddle ever again!!! Thanks for all replies guys :)

You can't go wrong with an Ideal. I also have a T6 and a T8, a KES and a Matty Marlow WH, all good saddles for this type of flat backed pony and cob.

had my very wide sec d in a wintec wide :)

My Welsh D came with a Wintec GP with an extra wide gullet in it. I had one for my TB X mare previously and I loved it and it always fitted great, however it just doesn't fit my Welsh D at all. I have messed about with different gullets and finally put the extra wide (white) one back in and made it higher using a ProLite pad. It will have to do for now while I save up for something else at the end of the year when I can afford it.

So this thread has been very helpful :)

My D would like to point out that he is neither fat nor round. He merely has well-sprung ribs....

I think the Wintec trees are just the wrong shape for this sort of build. Mine was in a Wintec before I had him and it just didn't fit.

I agree. What did you get in the end? The problem with my boy is on his shoulders, that's where saddles seem tight. He's wide with shallow withers which then causes saddles to lift at the back.

I ended up with a Kent and Masters ordinary GP, not the cob version. We tried so many saddles but I am fortunate that my fitter has a D herself so is good at fitting them.

I spent months searching for a saddle that really fitted my Sec D well. Hated the Wintec.
I took a chance and bought a GFS Haflinger xwide 17" from eBay for £180. It fits like it was made for him and is so comfortable to ride in. Also use a Barnsby anti slip gel pad and a GFS atherstone leather girth.

The wintec and bates wide saddles aren't just standard ones with a wide gullet in them, their a different shape tree. I looked at loads of different ones for my boy and the bates has been perfect, he also has a wintec wide GP.
