What saddle(s) do you own?

I have a WOW and absolutely adore it! Only have the dressage flaps at the moment but will invest in jumping flaps when I start jumping Bailey again

I did email them but they didn't think they'd be able to sort me out with anything under about £450
frown.gif
And that was second hand! I know I can get a wow for between £650 and £750 fully fitted second hand hence wondering if that may be a better investment as it will last long term
confused.gif
Or I could get the horrible wintec reflocked and invest in a heather moffat seat saver thingy....

May tell them I have a bigger budget than I do and get them to come up with some stuff so I know what fits and then keep a look out on ebay..... Hmmm I don't know! I'm useless at this sort of thing

ooo that's news to me....... but i haven't brought saddle for 3 years and they were brilliant, but I did it face to face and even got too go around their stock room looking for exercise saddle which would fit my horses template and picked up nice saddle for £150.00, but i was good name but not in fashion.... if you know what i mean...

I would defo go back but i know Head Chap is in great demand....

re: the wow saddle, i swap seats and have a deep seat, and my friend does flatwork with her dressage flaps on a flat....and we both get on fine either way.

In time i will try and make two saddles out of what i have got. But i have managed perfectly well so far.

i just have a wow with 2 sets of flaps, and a jeffries VSD

hahaha Miller, 18 bridles for 2 horses! and i was consumed by guilt yesterday in my tackroom contemplating my 9 bridles (for 5 horses, so not quite so bad...)
don't say a word about the 8 saddles, 4 of which i never use...)

re: WOWs, well, i'm a convert, after one day! my new mare is very very happy in it. however, i went for a jumping saddle first, and as i'm very long from hip to thigh i went for the flat seat (no choice really, anything else tips me forward and makes me rotate around my knee) with xc flaps. so, in a few months when i've saved up again, i'll get a dressage one with a deep or very deep seat, and dr flaps. no way i could interchange them... i ride at such different lengths dr cf xc, and need such different seats.
it's the comfiest saddle i have ever sat in, i must say. i keep going and stroking it.

Agree re. the stroud man, (Lawrence is it Kick_On?) he fitted my jump saddle and it fits G very well. Any flocked saddle with small points such as a Barnsby or Ideal would be perfect for Tills Ginn, as she needs small points for her shoulder freedom, and flocked saddles, if you have a good saddler will fit for years and years as there is so much scope for adjustment.

Re. the Wows, after looking at my Jump and Dressage saddle and seeing how different they are designed right from the panels to the seat and flaps, I cant see how one saddle can be 2 "specialist" saddles. I have considered them, but personally would buy one only for dr OR jumping,as stated by Kerilli

I personally have a Bates Momentum and an Albion Dressage saddle (with small points!) as G has a huge shoulder and cant have any makes with longer points.

Don't mean to sound really stupid but what do you mean by "points"?

I agree, Lawrence is fab but has a huge waiting list atm so suggested I use Carolyn - do you have any experience with her? Have seen some lovely GP's on ebay including Ideal, Crosby, Jeffries and Barnsby, all only a few years old and all going for within my budget, its just the gamble of whether or not they'll be adjustable to fit. Having spoken to Carolyn she seems to think that due to Tilly's "type" it'll be difficult to find a saddle to fit for my budget! Think I'll have to get her (or wait for Lawrence) out, try loads and then hunt for something on ebay....

Either that or go down the wow route as I've been offered one for £750 in pretty good nic...

I do also have a Bates GP and while Im reluctant to use it (it is in nearly new condition) I am hoping that once she's learnt to respect her saddle with regard to flinging herself into gates and the like that it will become my everyday saddle and I'll use it for lessons with the RC etc. What do you think of the bates? Personally I think mines lovely and comfy compared to the wintec to ride in but Im toying with the ideal of having the Cair removed and having it flocked as the pannels feel so hard under pressure.

The points are the bits that sit behind her shoulder....think of the bits on either side of her wither, where there is a hard bit on either side?! if they are short they dont interfere with the shoulder movement
smile.gif

Dont know Carolyn...but if you have a Bates, then why not use that, when you are thinking of shelling out ££ more on a wow which you will feel the same about? And then you'll have 2 saddles you dont want to use!

Personally not that keen on Cair, G became a little bit fussy about being tacked up, and think it was because if the Cair as he is softer in his flocked dressage saddle. Now use a Prolite pad under his jump saddle and have no probs....

Ahh ok, that makes sense! I see what you mean about the wow too (I wouldn't even be considering one for the moment had I not been offered one second hand quite cheaply).

Hmm, back to square one! Get Lawrence up and see what fits, perhaps get him to look at the fit of the wintec and the bates on madam and go from there.

I'm just amazed from this post how much variety there is when it comes to saddles!

Lol! Yes there is a lot of variety....Tilly doesnt look a difficult shape to me. I have been told by severla "lesser" saddlers that G was difficult to fit, but both Lawrence and my saddler now both said that was a load of tosh. Personally in your situation I would stick with what you have got and go from there....use your Bates and buy a saddle cover!!

The Bates are quite tough though..mine looks better wth use I think!

Well thats what I thought - ok so she's a fairly typical tb/sport horse type but I wouldn't have said she had particularly hiigh withers
confused.gif

I don't thinks she's too narrow really - at one point she was borderline blue/black (so med-wide/wide) and atm is borderline green/balck (so med-narrow/med)

But Carolyn seemed to think otherwise:

The second-hand saddle market for the thoroughbred types is very limited these days, mainly because saddle fitting ideas have changed. In order to give room around the withers and lift over the withers, we suggest a bigger and deeper weight bearing surface. It does depend on the shape of your horse of course; you will also find that the older saddles will put you in an older type of seat- legs forward etc. The more modern design of saddle will put you in a more 'correct' seat position, but this will also mean that they will be a newer saddle thus the price will be higher.

Second hand saddles do get stretched on different horses and could have been altered, so, two saddles of the same fitting could potentially be completely different fits.

We have had in the past, used Albion 5000 GP's with deeper panals suitable for the Thoroughbred types, they have sold for around £650. New would be around £1100, subject to the fit required for the horse.

Makes me think I'd do better to wait for a consultation with Lawrence as everyone I've spoken to about him has nothing but positive things to say!

Hmm, wouldnt say she was particularly TB fit tbh. TB means high withers that need a drop panel, which is what she is referring to there...Tilly hasnt got "high" wither and so wouldn't shouldnt need drop panels, and tbh, alot of the "high wither" thing comes from lack of muscle/muscle wastage which I would be concerned about if was the case with Tilly, but 99.9% sure if she is those fittings with the wintec that wont be the case!!

Lawrence was one of the lead developed of the saddle co saddles to start with....mayvbe owrth keeping in mind too...see what he can do with what you have got.....he also does Wow if you wanted to try one, but dont think they would be you answer at the mo unless you just wante dthe 1 saddle for life now....

the only other thing to remeber with the wows..is that the stirrup[ bar is changeable to make it a better position for both dressage or jumping.

i am looking into buying a nice flat/xc seat for mine:) although the deep doesnt really get in my way!
iv even jumped in my dressage-but that kills your legs the next day hehe!

black cliff barnsby gp ex wide 18" love it and a Havanna made to measure Equinefit Walsall cost twice as much as Barnsby but dosn't fit as well !!!!!!!!!!!!!
