Not a massively wide boy but my boy is in an ideal saddle. He needs a wide saddle cut away from shoulders and this saddle does the job really well and doesnt feel too wide to sit on.
Generally any wide show saddle type really...I hate anything with forward cut knee rolls on them as they're short backed enough anyway most the time and like their shoulder free
I have had a saddle company made to measure. Loved it! Now have Kent and masters GP for my Irish cob. He's not very wide and has quite high withers for a cob
i have a saddle company working hunter one for my big fat welsh D, it was made to template and has been widened a couple of time too!! oopsies!! but it is fab i love it and its fits her perfectly x
I used to have a shire x, I had him in a thorowgood cob GP in xw setting, good saddle and the 4 point girthing was particularly good for those flat backed round horses
Saddle company. Around £700 brand new but can pick them up for around £300 on ebay etc. Adjustable which is brilliant - can be widened/ narrowed out the back of the van the fitter comes in. Got one for my mare and its like riding a different horse - didn't know she could walk out!
I have a Heather Moffett Soft tree Saddle. It fits well and doesn't block her shoulder as it is flexible. It has saved my lots of frustration as when I bought her she would have been a M/MW fit and now she isn't skin and bone she is probably a wide fit with a few X's infront.
She would have been a nightmare to fit a treed saddle to as she is so wide. When I moved yards the first thing the YO said as I unloaded from the horsebox was 'how do you get a saddle to fit on that!'
Made to template saddle company cob saddle. Very comfortable for both me and my boy and reasonable at £700 for the Vicenza model which has the leather flaps instead of the synthetic backed ones.
I fit mostly wide (and very wide!) horses and ponies, for Native Pony & Cob Saddles Lts, and would recommend you look for the following features:
Flattish tree - depending on how much wither he has, the open part of the seat needs to be longish and flat to enable that part of the saddle to fit flat onto the horse. The pommel and cantle may be very low, or can be a little higher, depending on style of saddle and as I say how much wither the horse has.
Flat panels - both from front to back and from side to side at the rear. Gussets in a flocked panel are the most successful on wide horses. Too many "cob" saddles that I see have panels that are too round in profile, too overstuffed.
Shape of front of tree - if you horse has hardly any or no wither then you may well need a wider head to the tree - an upside down U rather than a V. This means the saddle can sit closer to the horse and you do not need to go TOO wide to get the saddle in balance and not to perch. If he has some wither then a more V shaped tree MIGHT work.
Girthing - four girth straps. The point strap can help stop a saddle going forwards, the rear straps can stabilise the saddle laterally, though I dont' use them often. I sometimes use it on ONE side only when there is an asymmetry (mild) that affects saddle fit.
I would also say that definitions of what fits varies. Saddles that need sticky pads, saddles that move a lot on mounting, that move to the outside in canter, that lift at the back really do not fit. Saddle fitting is as much about stability as it is about pressure. I would also say that with the trickiest fittings synthetic trees are just not as stable as traditional wooden trees, in my experience.
Jeffries event (w/xw) and SSC patriot monoflap dressage (w). She isn't a cob but has very broad shoulders (native x TB). Dressage saddle cost me double what the pony did but it's worth every penny : )
Getting my xxl id a saddle company saddle this Xmas. Got one for my tb and really rate them! Mine was made from template and I had the suede knee rolls and seat put on, great for that extra grip! Also had a gel seat put it, so comfy!! Cost me £1100 but my id is only a hack so going to get him a second hand one. They can be adjusted an unlimited amount of times too. As you can see, I love sc saddles!!!
I have a Harry Dabbs made to measure dressage saddle- specially made with a showing native tree but the harry dabbs dressage outer! He is XXXW so nothing else would fit!
A wintec with the widest gullet for jumping but it doesnt fit great.
Currently looking for a XXXXW saddle for my little exmoor cos she is basically a table. Thinking maybe just a second hand treeless.
