What salt do you feed?

Salt Lick (on the wall) with added Biotin.

The problem I have is with the actual salt lick holders. The horrid plastic covered ones rust and are a waste of money, and the stainless steel holders don't fit the salt licks so I have to take a hammer to them.

I feed mine a tbsp-ish of normal table salt in her dinner if she is particularly sweaty or worked hard. Other than that she just has a Himalayan salt block on her stable wall, and she gets a normal mineral balancer lick as a treat now and again (she regards the mineral lick as crack cocaine, so I can't heave it out all the time!)

Mine have access to three blocks on the internal wall of the big field shelter, 1 x himalayan rock, 1 x 'old fashioned' salt lick brick and 1 x apple flavoured salt lick brick.

After a days initial excitement over the apple flavoured one in early October, its been ignored.
1 x mini likes the Himalayan, as does NF, the other mini prefers the std brick salt lick.

I only ever add it to feed on occasions for NF, such as when we are away from home.

I use Himalayan salt which I get in tubs from a seller on ebay, its the fine stuff not the coarse stuff.
This. Although I stupidly bought the coarse one last time!
I was feeding table salt/cheapy supermarket stuff thinking salt is salt but then read that it contains anti caking agent (no idea where I read that or if it's true!)

I don’t add salt routinely.
I usually have himilayan blocks on rope hung in the stable (which reminds me I need more!). If something is working very hard through the summer then I’d add commercial electrolytes daily.

So weird, after responding to this thread, I noticed a post someone shared from ECIR group on fb... it's a lami group I think. This is so interesting, I never knew that horses were deficient in iodine... did you?

Some horses are not all by a long stretch. Himalyan salt also contains iron which most horses arent deficient in.

I feed table salt from whichever supermarket I happen to be in when I need it. I am aware of the fuss about caking agent but I only feed 40gms most days so I'm not unduly concerned.

Mine has a Himalayan salt lick - however, she'll only lick the NAF one - I've tried other brands but she won't touch them... go figure...
