I'm collecting a trailer next week and just wondering what security you all have?
I already have a wheel clamp and intend to get a hitch lock but was also thinking of a GPS tracking device so was interested in any views on these?
Thanks in advance :)

Check what your insurance says, they usually have certain requirements.

We have a hitchlock and a wheel lock, which hubby insists went on the rear wheel, so it still acts if the trailer was lifted at the front and dragged away (the front wheel would be off the ground so the wheel lock wouldn't have an effect..)

Painting your postcode somewhere not obvious, such as on the roof or inside a light fitting is another way your trailer could be identified if stolen.

Also look at where it is kept - ours is in a locked yard, out of view, in a place that is not easy to hitch up and drive out from..

I just have a wheel clamp on mine. But our yard is also secure/locked and hidden from the road so never worried much about security.

None, neither does the quad which I frequently leave overnight with the keys in.

But they are parked practically under the window and in view of the dog yard, nothing gets on the yard without the dogs announcing it, a 'person on the yard' bark is different to a cat crossing the yard bark.

I really am grateful I don't live in the UK, so many people I know have had their trailers swiped (all IW's incidentally) In the UK I wouldn't even leave my horses out overnight, paints, palominos, minis - they'd be gone in a week. :( It is a sad reality of life.

The worst thing that happens here is that the kids beat hell out of mailboxes - witness mine this morning.

Oh no that is one sad mailbox! Reminds me of the film Stand by me!
The trailer is a Bateson so not sure if they are the sort thieves go for? But if it's easy to take I'm sure it would go regardless.
Thanks for all the great advice though, really helpful x

i have just done up an ancient rice, now it is road worthy i have orderd some strong security devices- been recomended bulldog for very strong and difficult to remove. getting both hitch lock and wheel clamp.
never heard about gps tracking, i like to think that with 2 forms of lock on they wont bother! mine is in a barn, but in an open lots of barns random people could easily drive to without anyone noticing... we get lots of fly tipping there :(

What everyone forgets is that all these devices only have a certain amount of keys. We got a bull dog which had no keys due to manufactures error no worries chap in shop raided the boxes and all had the same key..... All my security gear is to please the insurance and hopefully get the thief to go elsewhere! We nearly always have one car on drive parked by trailer ok yes they could get it but wasting precious minutes might mean a neighbour sees them! And it's a fautra, quite rare compared to iws.

I apply my standard 'make sure mine is shittier-looking than most' policy. Disreputable looking heavy old Rice is generally OK to leave lying around.

My locks are combi locks and chains are unbreachable with bolt cutters and the neighbours would hear a stil saw ;)

Also has post code and initials on the roof, you can only do what you can, if people want to steal something then they will do what they can regardless :(
