My horse that i generally ride is mare, had no preference when i was looking to buy was just a case that i bought the horse that ticked most boxes and she happened to be a mare.
I have 2 'boys' and would only choose to have a gelding, however I have been riding a Mare for over 2 years and she is lovely and recently ridden another good friend's Mare and she is lovely too ..... so I am being swayed
Buy geldings as mares do my head in if there particularly tempramental. however will ride anything and some that i ride are mares so dont mind riding them, just dont like owning them!
Mares.
One reason if your mare suddenly becoms un rideable because of some accident (basically not hereditary) then at least she can serve a purpose as a brood mare. Whereas geldings just stand in a field with a big useless willy
I have a gelding, had a mare and she was such a character, ben is a pushover you tell him to do something but you have to ask a mare
I dont really mind to be honest, There is one mare that I ride and she is the most stubborn, pig ignorant mare I have ever met, she is also chestnut if that means anything to anyone lol but she is awful to ride evades everything and general pain in the backside.
i have always had mares because they where the right horse for me when i was looking! i`m not really bothered what sex although i do feel sometimes when you strike a good bond with mares she`ll always try that little bit harder for you than a gelding (or is that just me? :
I have had a couple of brilliant mares over the years but generally prefer geldings - there is nothing worse than being hormonal the same time as your mare - its not fireworks its full out thermo-nuclear war! Current score is 3 geldings and 1 small feisty mare who has more attitude than the other 3 put together! (she has never realised that she is only 11h)
I own all geldings, I'm quite bossy and my geldings tend to do what they are told ( well on a good day !) I did own a mare once and kept her for all of 6 weeks she was an absolute nightmare she would rear up and over on you without any warning signals. Did it once on the road and frightened the life out of me ! Decided at this point I would never have a mare again !!!!!!! Having said this my friend only owns mares as she just loves em !
Two geldings, one mare who was bought as a companion, and now we have her yearling filly too. The geldings are uncomplicated (that doesn't mean they are obedient!), the mare is in season a lot at the moment, and the filly has been seen to stamp her feet in anger, and also to throw herself on the floor to try and avoid doing something she would rather not (in that particular case, just staying in a stable she knew with another horse next to her, so no big deal!)
As we are moving house and will be on open moorland with feral ponies all over the place, I will feel happier hacking on a gelding than a flirty winking mare too!
Well, I have three mares...but have ridden geldings, stallions and mares.
I would like to think that I can adapt to ride a wide variety of horses.
Geldings to some extent are flatter, easier, calmer, horses...without testosterone issues, so are maybe more suitable for novice riders, IMO. I think sometimes we forget that mares are entire, too...so have a little bit more about them, but don't suffer fools as readily as a gelding will.

Prefer geldings always.
Mares do have too many issues most of the time.
Maybe thats why there always seems to be more mares for sale the geldings. (especially chestnut mares)
Alot of peeps who buy a first horse (not pony) often buy a mare rather than a gelding and soooo manny of them buy ex-racehorses. Then can't handle them. The dealers certainly see them coming.
Also alot seem to think if it ever can't be ridden put it in foal (too much indescriminate breeding) no wonder alot of horses for sale are nut cases.
I originally wanted to buy a filly but they wanted stupid money for them,so bought a little colt instead
......gelded and 12yrs later it was the best decision i ever made
The problems i have seen people have with mares and we are just great, lol
,the only time i wish he were a mare is to breed from,he has pretty good confo and a temperament to die for!!
All in all i personally wouldnt touch a mare with a 10ft bargepole but that is personal choice(yes....i have had a mare and she was awesome, missed her to bits when she went, however now after owning a gelding i will have them over and over)!

The mare i had was fab,but know what you mean, most should be used for breeding only, lol!!!
Not tarring them all with the same brush
,but god do they have issues!!
I had to laugh when 1 person said to me "mares are sooo loyal",then they went out to catch it and couldnt
A mare as that is how she came, a chestnut one at that! Mind you, I'd rather trust her than some geldings I know, she is an utter star. It is true though, you tell a gelding, ask a mare & discuss with a stallion (I think that's right).
