A mare as that is how she came, a chestnut one at that! Mind you, I'd rather trust her than some geldings I know, she is an utter star. It is true though, you tell a gelding, ask a mare & discuss with a stallion (I think that's right).

The mare i had was chestnut tb

,and she was absolutely awesome(used to pull some class faces but would never hurt you),but.....i have never met 1 like her since, loved her to bits!!!Until i got my big lad!Everybody on the yard loves him!

Yes. That's how I am about her, she is one in a million & although I'd never turn down a horse just because it was mare/gelding. She will take the pi$$ when you're on her back but she would never intentionally hurt you.

Makes me laugh how everyone pre judges her on her colour though!

Love that pic of yours in your sig though, the one with your little boy (?) sat on him with you. Cute!

We have four geldings and one feisty mare. I used to have a newfie mare and we clashed badly. She was very nappy and I was often found at crossroads fighting to go the way I wanted to go. I made sure I won each time but we still clashed, although the girls thought she was wonderful. I love my gelding, he's everything I've ever wanted in a horse, big, chunky, forward going but I trust him totally

Mares for me everytime, our first horse was a gelding, brilliant for novice horse owners. Since him (30 odd years ago) we have had mares and although they can have 'issues' they are more fun and the Appy mares are very loyal and believe that you belong to them, rather than the other way round

i do feel sometimes when you strike a good bond with mares she`ll always try that little bit harder for you than a gelding (or is that just me? :

No, i definatly agree... a good mare is worth 100 Geldings... but then im biased only having owned mares.

BUT i did help out with some geldings and they def didnt give as much as the mares did.

No option for me.

I have all of them.

No preferences, apart from the Paint mare and the stallion they are all as dippy as fruitbats.

I've ridden some very nice mares but prefer to own a gelding. I like the consistency and I find them more affectionate. I've seen enough people battle with stroppy mares to know that's not for me. I know not all mares are like that (I had one on loan for a year, and she wasn't the least bit marish) but I'd have to be sure before I would even consider one.

Will ride either but own a gelding, as that was what he was when I bought him! Wouldn't really want to own a mare cos' of all the hormones and the messy stable!

I have a Dales stallion and a Dales gelding; the stallion is brilliant - a lot of presence but is extremely mannerly!

I'm a gelding person too. Mares can be so bloody temperamental and fussy! But when you form a good bond, they will try their heart out for you.

I have a gelding. I bought a gelding intentionally as I didnt want to end up with a really tempremental mare, however my gelding likes to pretend to be a mare at times so if I ever got another it would not bother me either way to be honest. Out of all the mares and gelding I have ridden on the yard I have never noticed any difference.

I have never ridden a stallion though so can not comment on that one

I ride both mares and geldings. Currently I'm competing two mares and a gelding and I can't say that any problems I have are due to their gender! One of the mares can have issues at shows, but this is her first season competing so a lot of things are very new to her. I have had one extremely hormonal mare in the past, but I've had a few iffy geldings as well. To me temperament and attitude are more important than sex, colour and breeding.

I have ridden mares and geldings. I went out looking to buy a mare but two geldings found me, both are full of character (think someone said earlier on that you tell a gelding and ask a mare) as long as I tell politely we are okay!

I have one of each!
smile.gif

When I was looking to buy my last horse, I didn't even look at mares because mine is so feisty and temperamental. But having bought an old woman of a gelding who worries about absolutely everything, I wouldn't rule out a mare again.

I have to add that my old mare is never 'marish' - the only way I know she's in season is by er...external signs on her back legs. And she's been turned out with a stallion, had a foal, so is/was fertile.
And I've seen some very 'marish' squeally, kicky, flouncy geldings...

Wouldn't it be interesting to have a blind trial - of mares, stallions and geldings, to see if a rider could correctly identify their gender?

Prefer geldings, but i have both, and wouldnt pass on a perfect horse because it was one or the other.

I can't vote as have, or have had, all of those.

I love riding my mares, they are quirky and always good fun. I love riding my geldings as they just do what you tell them and never complain. I have loved riding the stallions (don't have any now) as they were all laid back and kind natured but the ones I've had or ridden have been erring on the side of lazy.

Stallion. I have only ever had stallions.

My first horse was an unbroken 4yo Arab stallion (great choice for a novice, eh?) and my new boy was bought as a 2yo colt. He's now 4 and will be backed soon - keeps getting interrupted by stud duties LOL!

I think the old saying goes: "Tell a gelding, ask a mare, discuss it with a stallion!" There is some truth in this, I think, although I find with stallions it's best if you can let them think it was their idea in the first place (not unlike human males LOL)!

But they are great fun to ride and to be around. My second choice would be a mare. I don't get on quite so well with geldings, although obviously it depends on the individual horse.

I have ridden all sexes but only ever owned geldings, I do get on with them alot more than mares but didn't set out to purposly buy a gelding.

I ride both happily, but I do prefer mares. I generally find that geldings are simpler rides - you get on, tell them what to do and they do it. With mares I find that you have to discuss with them first and find out how to get through to them - once you've found the best way, they try their hearts out for you. I've only ever really clicked with mares, but perhaps that's just me.
