College In the week, home on the weekends :)

I am off to College in September :D which i can't wait for. But the problem is that i can only come home every other weekend :( so that means i wont get to see my horses and minis or even ride them (horses not minis :p). My mum will do horses e.g. muck out and basic jobs but wont ride as she is a novice and my TBxID is to much for her to handle but my Welsh Cob is perfect for her and she will ride him every now and then with me but atm just hasn't got time. So my problem is who is going to ride my gorgeous boys when im at college? My instructor is going to come and school my TBxID once or twice a week but this isn't enough excercise for him and i don't have anyone to ride my Welsh.

Do you think i should make a add too look for someone? I have also been looking on Equestrian websites for people in my area and have found someone i like the sound of so should i give her a ring and then book and appointment for her to come and ride and she whether i am happy for her to ride my two. I am very protective over my TBxID as he is very sensitive and not a novice ride. Where my Welsh is great for a novice and is very cheecky.

I also think sometimes it is just better not to have someone but then i think this isn't very fair on my 2 boys as they love being ridden.

Thanks in advance xx:)

If anyone else has any other ideas PM me. x

Unfortuantely i can't take them with me as the course im doing you can't take your own horses.
I would loan them out but i am very protective over my boys and they would have to stay at my yard or stay around my area.
I would rather a sharer than putting them out on loan so this is a possibility.

Thanks lexie x

When I went to Uni I had the same issue. Like you, I was very lucky as my Mum loves horses though she no longer rides, and was happy to look after him while I was away. I didn't want a sharer for him because I couldn't find anyone I trusted to ride him (I know there are sharers out there who are much better riders than me, but I couldn't find the right person).

We struck a deal with my instructor: we would pay for him to school my boy once a week, but he could also come and ride (hacking or schooling) whenever he had time. This meant the horse got more exercise and RI could go for a fun hack if he wanted. It worked as RI was too busy to have his own horse and got a bit sick of only ever riding problem horses.

If RI was too busy to do extra riding my mum would lunge or do groundwork with him twice a week, and Dad would hack at weekends.

Essentially, it takes some lateral thinking, but if you have willing family members then it's possible. He wasn't quite as fit as when I was home all the time, but when I came back for holidays he was rideable amd beautifully schooled.

Thanks Half-halt. Replied now x

Thanks Steorra. Your RI sounds lovely. I love my RI and she is very willing to come and ride him. But she wouldn't be able to ride him every evening as she has 3 horses of her own and has a youngster which she competes a lot on. She would be willing to come on weekends to ride him as she doesn't work on weekends. I think i will do the same as you and make a plan with her about riding TBxID. Think i have sorted someone riding my Welsh :D x

Do you keep your horses on a livery yard? If you do im sure there will be lots of people willing to look after and ride them while you are away.
A girl at the livery yard i keep mine at went to college, and put her horse out on loan, on conditions that the horse must stay at the same yard, no moving around and it must compete, so it was always fit and ready to go when she came back from college, also it was getting miles on its clock by being taken out places.
Just suggestions, i understand if you dont want to loan! There can be tricky people around.

Sounds intersting Steorra. x

Jester - Nope can't do that as the stud i will be working at his far away from the college stables and i have to be at the stud farm for 7 till 9 then we have assembly then go to lessons so wont have time to do my boy before 7 as the yard opens at 6:45. x Thanks for suggestion x

Tiggerlilly - Thanks. Nope i am not at a livery yard. Yeah i have heard bad storys about loaning out to people so thats why i am put off by that but i would consider a sharer but horse MUST stay at yard. x
