Hello, I'm moving my horses from being out 24/7 to being in a stable purely because my young horse has lost a lot of confidence over the winter just hacking out, so I'm moving somewhere with an arena!! Yay!! This is the first time stabling my young horse in his life, so a bit nervous as to him he's going to cope. We have the horselyx and pony balls at the ready to keep him well fed and entertained!!

My main question to anyone who reads this is what shavings do you use and why? It's been about 8 years since I last had one stabled so I'm sure there's different things on the market now. Straw defiantly not an option as not allowed on yard.

Thanks in advance for any opinions!! :)

I'm new to stabling again after 13 yrs off

I've moved from straw to shavings and have tried a feW And am currently using Mendip shavings. They are sort of medium sized flakes and I get through two bales a week. I have tried bedmax and Mendip new flake, which are bigger and look nicer but I was using three bales a week. Also tried the tiny flakes from robinsons and thought they were rubbish

I love natural flake, but my local feed store don't stock them now, so I went to bedmax... YO allowed us one bag of her bulk buy shavings, but they are very dusty so I only use them when I run out..

If I use hunter shavings I only use one a week and once a month I will top it up by putting 2 in a one week, its a very deep bed with banks and stays really clean and white all through winter, I have tried snowflake and phlospan and a few other brands and end up having to use 2 most weeks so for £1.50 more a bale the Hunters are best.

Hunter sound like the way forward then!! How many bales did you use to initially make up a bed? I'm thinking about 10 per stable should do but not entirely sure?
Thank you for all your replies!! I'm only used to poo picking so mucking outs going to be a shock to the system!! :)
