I have, this evening. seen a pony which has allegedly been lying down all week, stricken with laminitis

It has had a recent, very acute attack, the owners were prompted to call the vet which they did, albeit grudgingly. The vet was summoned to deal with colic (

) and quickly ascertained the true cause of the trouble. The pony is on a straw bed and is a huge native (not tall, simply solid and terribly overweight).

It is off the Outshine and conditioning cubes thank the Lord, but now on haylage.

The owner hardly bothers with it and haven't even got it on shavings. The YO hasn't intervened at all, but one of the liveries did, but only enough to get the vet involved in the first place.

Can anything else be done to make these stupid people look after their pony properly? Our pony had Cushing's induced laminitis but I rarely saw her lie down, and I bust a gut to keep her comfy and happy.

I believe the YO has a duty of care and can be prosecuted if they are found not to intervene if an owner is causing a horse suffering. I'd start by informing the YO of this and stress how serious and painful the condition is. They need to know you might report them.

Poor poor pony.

What about contacting local BHS welfare officer?

I agree with post about YO, I'm sure they have some sort of responsibility if horse/pony is seriously ill injured and owners aren't doing anything.

This is what I wondered - surely they can't just let a person leave a pony in the field all summer without seeing it and then fetch it in and feed it fit to burst. I believe it was so sore it was leaning against the walls for support at one point

I did wonder if, since they have had a vet to it, that they were classed as treating the pony. I get the impression they don't think it's that bad

I'll find out more and see what I can do.
