When we got this horse last summer his mane was rubbed shorter towards the top so it was left to grow. Now the mane is longer and quite thick.

We want to be able to plait the mane easily so would appreciate your suggestions on how to tackle a long thick mane.

me neither but we did this if it helps

a few years back in 2 pulling sessions, has remained pulled since then length depending on whether showing or plaiting ;)

Sorry everyone. It seems the file size was too large. Can someone please tell me how to make it the right size? I just can't manage 19.5kb without the photo becoming smaller than a stamp!

Lovely photos ester. Exactly what I meant. How long did it take to shorten the mane the first time and then the second? I haven't pulled a mane for years and when I did it took hours!

I shortened a very long mane recently by cutting it with scissors (yep! but cutting up into it, cutting a little at a time, not straight across), then I used a Smart Tails rake which thinned it enough to plait. Although they're still a bit golf bally so I've been having another go earlier with the rake. I've got the thicker type rake for the mane and the thinner type on for neatening the tail so it sort of looks pulled. I hate pulling manes and tails, fine if the horse is ok with it but I dont know many horses who are and I dont blame them.

oh, about 20 mins a time (it's about 10 for me to do it now). I would pull yours :), I took a bit of nagging as had just got used to it long (he came hogged) for the previous few years but he def looks smarter and younger pulled.

I don't like anything done with a gadget, i'd rather keep on top of it with a few mane comb tugs very day, and regular brushing.
If they find it sore, do it after exercise when horse is still warm.
