Im in a situation where my Next door neighbor who already has lessons with me wants me to take her horse in for schooling livery. Now i normally only do livery in the summer months due to a few reasons & i have a set price for schooling livery.

So i have to option of leaving this horse where she is, but i bring it over to mine & school it everyday.
Do i charge the same amount as i normally would for schooling horses, this would mean me having to bring in tack up & bring it over to mine??
Normally i wouldnt be tacking up & bringing in, as if im just riding the owner would do this, however the lady would be at work when i would be riding this mare.

Also this lady may be going away on holiday later in the year, & she will want me to do schooling livery again she has already said.
So i was going to suggest the horse stays where it is & i livery it at her's & do the schooling at mine.
But im at a loss at how much to charge as it would be effectively full schooling livery but without bedding & hay cost.
Would that sound about right to you lot??

what do you normally charge for a schooling session?

i normally charge £20/session but if it was only next door and was an ongoing arrangement i would drop to £15/session even with having to get in and tack up myself.

I charge £25.00 for schooling, it's not really an on-going arrangement.
The lessons are though, i would rarther keep to the same amount i charge everyone though for schooling. People talk & it wouldnt be fair on other clients if i dropped the amount especially as i would be having to bring in groom & t/o. I was actually thinking of charging a bit more for the extra's??

I normally charge a bit less for full livery here.

But for this Lady being as horse would stay put i was thinking of just take off money for feed & bedding.
Would you be happy with that arrangment??

Oh sorry i misunderstood it's only a week it's literally coming for boot camp.
Then it will have another week later on in the year when she goes on holiday & i would do full schooling livery with the horse staying at hers.

How often would you be riding the horse? Say if it was 6 days a week, that would be £150 just for the riding, and any extra you want to charge on top for bringing in etc?

Obviously if you charge a bit less than that normally for full schooling livery including mucking out, bedding, hay, feed etc then the amount per session might need to be looked at?

Yes, your right. Im tyring to work it out while im at work, horses & my work dont mix with my brain lol.

Ive never had to do just schooling for a week as horses normally come to me & it's a straight forward schooling livery, I normally charge £145 per week for full schooling livery in the summer months, that includes everything.

So i should be dropping the amount for just schooling, bring in,groom, tack up & Tack up.

The only time i ride like this normally is when the client decideds they want me to ride in there lesson so i do charge the same amount as the lesson price for this. However the horse is brought to me fully tacked up & ready to go this is whats thrown me price wise.

Thanks my brain is haddled today!!

your current riding rate at £25/session comes to £175/week with the horse not staying at yours and no associated costs.

tbh, i still think that is too much and would think around £130-150/week would be much more reasonable.

The best way to do it i think is to take your standard £145 a week, and deduct approx costs for hay, bedding, feed and labour to look after for one week, and go from there.

Thanks, yes i think that would be a good way forward with regards to full livery. I have to remember that i would have to walk over there morning & night which does add on time. I normally would do an late evening check also.

As a guide to what I have paid, for being broken to drive (which instead ruined myhorse) the cost was £150 per week which included full livery but no turnout at all.

Sending my horse for Horsemanship schooling was £300 per week in full livery and included turnout. (only down side was my horse came back to me with really bad mud fever which ended up costing over £500 to treat over the winter months)

So if it were the other way around what would I charge in your circumstances?

First thing is, time is money as is fuel (not sure how far you need to travel).

I would prefer the horse to be at my premises but if this was not possible at this time then I would charge with the fact of having to travel and bring the horse over into consideration.

So for this I would charge by the hour not what I was doing.

Again you have time and fuel. So for this you could charge what you would normally.

Would you be doing any mucking out etc whilst he is in your care? If it's the same sort of routine, but just at hers rather than yours, then just take £145 and minus feed, hay and bedding.

When she goes on holiday yes the horse would be in my sole care, meaning full schooling livery so all chores would be done by me including riding. Horse would stay where it is & i would bring it over to mine (which is a 5 min walk there & back) to school.

The other one would be 6 days of riding the horse for the owner, so the owner would do daily chores & i would ride. But this would mean i would have to Bring in, groom, ride ( at mine in manage) & take back & turn back out, as owner would be a work.
Owner would then do her evening chores as norm.

It sounds quite complicated when i read it, however i just can't see the point of un-settling the horse for a week when im just over the road!!
Plus the Mare very Mareish (sp) & i have all geldings here, one who was a late cut stallion. I could foresee possible problems with this Mare if kept here at mine, normally it's not a problem but this particular mare is one i watch very carefully.

I'd take livery charge and deduct feed, hay, bedding and labour.

While you would need to collect the horse, it would be churlish to charge extra for that as she is a close neighbour as well as sounding like a good client. It is always useful to keep a horsey neighbour on your side!
