In august i'm taking Vandi (4 year old) to camp at somerford park. now i just need to decide what lessons i want to do with him. He's schooling nicely on the flat (would easily do a prelim test if he behaved) and is popping teeny courses of jumps with little fillers and done a water tray. He's also hacking out but only really done walk and mostly in company. so which two lessons do i pick out of the 3?

Based on your description of his work, I've voted for flatwork and jumping.

It seems a huge pity to waste the fabulous XC schooling at Somerford, but I'm not sure much of it could accurately be described as 'small'. I didn't see much under Intro size. Depends on your instructor (and your definition of small

), a girl on our course was jumping tiny, probably 1' 6" at most, cross poles in SJ and still managed to jump a course XC.

If you've not been before - enjoy - its fantastic!!!

I put flatwork because you can't** do too much, if you see what I mean .....
....
and XC because it seeems you are on with your showjumping and it is something you can do at home. XC with an instructor in tow would be a wise move I think.

Edited to say can't, not can (doh!)

Somerford is great! Do you know which instructors will be teaching? It would be a massive shame if you didn't get to have a play on the XC course, are you allowed to go on it while not in lessons?
I found the XC and SJ teachers fab and my XC lessons there really taught me alot. So i've put XC and SJ. I did enjoy the flatwork lessons too but I think you should take advantage of the fab facilities there.

Which do you enjoy more and which would you like to improve at the most? I think thats the best way to decide.

agghhhh...the vote is totally split!! normally when i go to camp i always do the SJ and the XC but thats because i've always been on more experienced horses so have been able to jump all the big stuff on the XC. i think there are quite a few teeny logs and there is a little sunken road and there is the water to play in too- what i'm worried about is that i don't know who the trainer is yet and so if its someone 'gung-ho' or not very sympathetic it could mean a bad intro to XC (it was meant to be Ian Olding bless him but no replacement has been organised yet)
i think i'll do the SJ as its my trainer running it so seems a shame not to have a couple of lessons with her in a strange place...
hmmm....stressage or XC?!!! i don't really like having new trainers for stressage- i get too confused...
