He was fine today and was then sick at tea time, went for walk and fine but refused gravy bone, never does that and then been sick about 5 more times, the last time was bile. He had the runs earlier on his walk too. He hasnt eaten his tea but Ive removed all food just incase.
Hes quiet at the moment but has been walking round crying. He is a drama queen but Im not sure if I should be doing anything. He hasnt had a drink since about 7pm now. Hes been at the stables today and as far as we know hasnt ate anything he shouldnt have.
Im probably over reacting but hes my first dog and its the first time hes been ill

I would maybe see if I could get him to the vet in the morning.

Vomiting five times with little rehydration would worry me.

He may have eaten something he shouldn't.

Is he swollen or bloated at all? Can you have a feel and see if anything feels odd in his abdomen?

Being sick isn't unusual, but being sick 5 or 6 times in the space of a couple of hours is a bit concerning. Also the fact he was crying earlier.

It may just be a bit of gastroenteritis from something unsavoury he has eaten, which is just dogs for you. But on the other hand he could have an obstruction which would be serious. If he's quiet then that's a good sign, but if he shows any more signs of distress I would call the vet even if it's during the night.

Could he have a blockage? I have to say if mine was wandering round crying I would be calling the vet to get an opinion :S

Thanks for replying.
Hes been quiet now for about 15 mins, hes lay on our bed!! I know but then he is a poorly boy

I dont think its bloat, he seems his normal lurcher skinny self but I will have a word with the vet in the morning if he doesnt brighten up.
Its worse as hubbys out and Ive been sat here on my own not knowing what to do, even though he wouldnt have a clue either

I'll go and check on him now.
Thanks again I really appreciate it.

If you get REALLY concerned called emergency vets.
Although, it could be just gastroenteritis
If you can get him to drink as much as possible

Do the skin pinch test (pinch a bit of skin and it should go back to normal shape within 2 seconds, if longer implies dehydration) do this a number of times before you go to bed as if he is getting really dehydrated you NEED to call the vet as it will require a drip!

Starve him for 24hrs and then do chicken and rice etc if you opt not to do the vet although a constant supply of water is VITAL!

hope he starts getting better

Hes asleep on the bed, he did this earlier on but then was sick again.
He usually walks round crying when he wants to go out for the loo so I just thought he wanted to go out and thought maybe he got belly ache as well. Never thought about a blockage!
If he starts again, I'll get in touch with my vet straight away.
Thanks for replying.

Still asleep on bed, hope whatever it was has passed. I have done pinch test and it seems ok although it isnt easy on a long haired dog! I will keep my eye on him though.
Sorry to be a complete worrier and thanks for all your advice.

How is he this morning? It's worth getting a few tin's of i/d from the vets for when they have upset tummies.

I'm glad that in your last post he was still resting and not distressed. You can never be too careful though so you're not an over-anxious Mummy. I didn't want to scaremonger yesterday by saying this, but a friend of mine lost a puppy to an internal blockage caused by swallowing a stone. She knew there was something seriously wrong but the vet wasn't so concerned, and by the time action was taken it was too late

Hence it's always best to err on the side of caution.

Hiya, thanks for asking about him. He was sick again later so I spoke to my vet who asked all the questions but then didnt seem over concerned but to keep a close eye on him. My hubby slept downstairs with him and then they BOTH came to bed about 5am. Hes been off all day and very quiet but had a bit of water so I was pleased, Then he was sick again twice and had the runs again but since then (about 3pm) hes not been sick, so fingers crossed. Hubbys just taken him for a walk to see if that will buck him up a bit and Im going to try him with a little chicken. Do you think that will be ok. I dont want to make him sick again. He hasnt eaten since dinner time yesterday.

I would be taking him to the vet if he was mine. He should not be still being sick if he hasn't eaten for so long. He could have some sort of stomach infection and if he is quiet as well I would be cioncerned. Let us know how he goes on.

hi, if hes no better tomorrow morning we are going to the vets. He told me to starve him for 24 hrs and rang me today to see how he was. Im worrying again now

Thanks, its awful seeing him like this. I offered him a small piece of chicken which he half heartedly ate so Ive not given him any more as I dont want to make him sick again. The vet told me to put a bit of sugar in his water and he had quite a large drink of that before.
I really hope hes more himself tomorrow, its awful as I feel so useless.

Will you let us know how he's doing in the morning. If he's not right, please don't be fobbed off by the vet - insist on taking him in straight away. There are all kinds of reasons for V&D and he needs checking out properly. Not cross with you, but I do think your vet ought to know better !

I was given a tip recently when my dog had V&D. I got some glucose and a small syringe and gave her 5ml of glucose solution every so often. It really helped her.
Obviously I was very careful when giving it to her.

My dog was exactly like this 2 weeks ago (he is 12) and it was very worrying - you think the worse, he would seem to perk up everyso often and would eat a little food but then would be vomiting (sort of out both ends really as nothing was solid!).

We took him to the vets, he gave an anti-vomiting jab and some long-lasting ABs, temp was fine, heart was fine his stoamch wasn't distended so we took him home. They gave us some electrolytes to put in his water and this did seem to help (helps give the intestine a break). However, he would not come right after a week. He went back to the vest but this time he had a slight temp. Again gave AB's etc and if not improved to go back for x-rays.

Oh, and just to note, he had a slight on and off limp all of this time too but i could not find anything. That wasn't getting better so I had a GOOD look and actually discovered a HUGE thorn embedded right in the middle of the foot. From a few posts on here previosuly i think it may well have been blackthorn and could well have been the cause of the problem (we will never know).

He went back from x-rays and it showed nothing, so he's had another course of AB's and he is back to his normal self again!

Have you looked at his gums - are they v dark or v pale? V dark/darker than normal can indicate a toxin is present (apparently - I watch to many vet TV progs!). My dog's were v v dark. It does sound very similar so he's probably ingested something he shouldn't which has irritated his gut. I would take to the vet to be honest if he's still depressed and poorly.

Hi, everyone, thanks so much for all your concern and help.
Hes much better today, thank god. I left him at home this morning as I thought coming to the stables wasnt probably a good idea but my friend said I should have brought him as it may buck him up, so hubby dropped him off and he played with his brother and sister (who live at the farm) for a bit. We gave him some chicken for his breakfast and some more at dinner, only a bit and although he still has the runs, hes eating and drinking and he hasnt been sick since about 3pm yesterday (touch wood). Im going to give him more chicken with a bit of rice tonight, chicken again tomorrow and then hopefully start him on his usual food again.
Thanks again everyone.

Glad he seems to be bettre but I would still keep an eye on him. Our dog seemed to perk up and we thought was getting better then he went more depressed again. He was not vomiting but he still had diarrhoea.

Hopefully your dog has managed come right on his own.

Ive just read through my post and realise I sound awful in not taking him to the vets. I just wanted to say that my friend is a vet and Ive been acting on his advice, I know he would never palm me off. He said last night to ring him at any time, if he got any worse, which thankfully he didnt. I posted on here first because I didnt want the vet to think I was being a neurotic worrier
laugh.gif

I just dont want anyone to think bad of me.
Thanks everyone.

Louby I have only just caught up with this thread but I have to say that as soon as I saw that he was a lurcher my inclination to say 'take him to the vets' declined
grin.gif
My lurcher was a real girls blouse when he was ill, and frequently was sick in the way you describe when he was younger because he got himself stupidly worked up due to running around too much
crazy.gif

But glad things have turned out OK

Hope he makes a quick and full recovery now

Thanks Acolyte
He is such an actor

. He has definately been ill but took him to the stables today and he was off, making loads of noise (as usual) jumping about AND eating carrots! All I could think was carrot sick yuk!
His lordships had more chicken tonight and touch wood seems fine. Im dreading giving him his normal food as hes definately going to turn his nose up at it and its took us ages to get Mr Fussy to eat in the first place.
