I need to sell my sweet man and i dont really want to. the story is i bought him a year ago as pretty much a rescue case he had been abused pretty much all his life and was very very underweight and could barely stand up his feet where in horrendous condition and he was very sad. now i have hit a financial brick wall and dont know the way forward only to sell him but i am terrified he will end up right back where i got him from being past from pillar to post and abused again and he really doesnt deserve it as he is the sweetest horse i have ever met. What should i do?

Do you think you could let potential purchasers take him on loan with a view to buy so you can get a really good idea of waht they are like? Or is too risky? I have seen some horses advertised this way.

Dont know if he is the type of horse that is easily rehomed.
He is a 4 year old Clydesdale and really really would like the best home for him as i couldnt live with myself if he ended up back with dealers or worse.

I would have to give stable up so there would be nowhere for him to go should it all go wrong. I really am in turmoil about it

Is there not a Clysedale society that might be able to help you out? Their fans are pretty passionate, I'm sure some one would help you. Poor little man, some body would love him - is he difficult to handle?

I would really love to but both me and my son are in financial meltdown at mo,I will try my best as he has cost me a small fortune since i bought him and i could not expect to recoup any of that as he is still underweight but getting there and his feet still need treatment to get them back to right shape, but i am willing to stand the loss if he gets the right home

He is an absolute puppy to handle never ever puts a foot out of line. this is why i find it so hard to understand why people were so horrible to him before i got him

Would he suit the RDA? Or is he too young? If you gifted him the RDA might have a member that could offer him grazing until he was ready to work?

Oh you poor soul, what a horrible situation to be in! Maybe on loan with a view to buy a few months later, so you can then see if its the right home for him! Maybe a sharer could be another way of keeping him but sharing the finances? Bet he's a lovely boy, clydes have the most amazing personality's, big friendly giants!! But they have the price to match it!! Good luck in what ever the outcome x

Good horses of that size do sell well people are always looking for big riding horses, if he is broken that is. Alternatively get a sharer for 6 months to help with the bills? let us know what you decide to do, and lets see some pics!x

Im not being nosey, I understand you have financial problems, do you need the money ( as in you need to sell him to get money) or you just cant afford to keep him etc. ?? If you just cant afford to keep him, put him on full loan nearby though, and it must be on the understanding that you may visit him as often as you like etc. Then maybe your problems will be sorted and 1 day you may be able to have him back, it would be sad to let him go.

He is not broken as he is only 4 and was so weak when i got him so basically has just been turned away and fed up for last year. I have a feeling he has been driven at somepoint before i got him as he had very badly fitting shoes on. He also has a broken tail where some bastard has dragged him round with it.I dont want big money for him. I cant really let him go on full loan as i would have nowhere to keep him should things not work out and he had to back(would have to give up stable and they dont come available too often on this yard)

I think this is an excellent idea.

The Clydesdale is an 'at risk' breed. I'm sure they may be in a position to help you re-home him.

Good luck - and let us know how you get on.

There were a couple of people posting on here recently looking for weight carriers, might be worth PMing them.

Don't discount loaning. You could build in a notice period if they want to return him and a month or two would be long enough to find grass livery which would do the job on a temporary basis while you find a new loaner.

If you don't actually need to sell him just can't afford to keep him, could you move him to grass livery and get a sharer to help with his costs? You could probably find someone experienced who could help back him.

If you weren't planning to back him yourself could you afford to get a pro to back him so that you can sell him for more and to a better home? If you ask around you might find a pro who would be prepared to break him sell him and take their fee from the sale price.

Try to think things through and not take a rushed decision. Best of luck.

RDA is a great idea if he is a nice steady character. If he was gifted they would probably be prepared to break him in and it would be a super home for him where he would be well cared for. Might be worth contacting them. They may even be prepared to take him on a long term loan so that you could have him back if your circumstances change in future.

If that doesn't fly you could try some reputable riding schools. The one where I ride often take newly backed youngsters as projects for the staff and in time they gain enough experience to start working in the school. Again they might consider a loan of maybe two years.

Could you PM me details and where you are? I know someone who has trained at Wellington Riding School up to her Stage 4 and currently owns a Shire who is looking for another and may be interested in a loan if you are

He is not strong enough yet to be backed yet. I am in comunication with clydesdale society about him and if nothing comes of that i will consider RDA.
NATS_UK I will pm you tomorrow as got to go out now
