I found like a weird, not quite sure what- cut maybe- difficult to see due to his hair on my dogs back.
It is seeping a bit of blood/puss... i can't feel anything under the skin, but its not an obvious cut, difficult to tell what it is.
I was prodding about a bit for a reaction from him and it was obviously sore.
Sprayed it with dention violet (sp?) after bathing it but would you take to the vets? or just keep an eye on it?
He is 11 years old and a lab, so obviously anything we are always a bit worried about...obviously we worry about our younger one, but things like these are a bit more worrying in him...
He has previously had a mole removed, as wasn't sure if it was something similar to that... they tested the mole for cancer but was fine...
Can get some pics if you want, although its difficult to see... might cut the hair a bit.. :o

I'm hopeless on advice about when to take them to the vet or not, unless we're talking about a runny tummy where I feel somewhat confident on being able to prevent dehydration, even when I know that I maybe could wait with taking my pets to the vet, I end up paying a vet bill, just to be on the safe side...

However, I can tell you that it has happened more than once that I've cut away some fur (in a discreet way), poured something that cleans wounds and contains Iodine (= makes the skin and/or light coloured hair temporarily orange) or put some adhesive tape in the fur (on dark coloured pets) on an area where I've found something suspicious, just to be able to feel more confident on quickly locating the place again, when we're at the vet.
So, if nothing else, I see nothing wrong with cutting away some hair, so that you can have a better look yourself.

Good luck and {{{fingers crossed}}} that it either is something that you can take care of by yourself or is easy for the vet to take care of.

It could be a sebaceous cyst. Older dogs sometimes get these, they are be filled with a substance a bit like cream cheese (sorry for anyone eating ) and will sometimes leak on their own, or can be squeezed. One of my old dogs had one on her withers, used to have to squeeze it and bathe it quite often as it never drained on its own but never caused a real problem. I agree with Finny the best thing is to cut the hair away round the area and bathe with boiled (and cooled) salt water. As long as it doesn't look too nasty I would monitor for a couple of days and if you are still concerned after that then check with the vet.

Right, off to trim my poor doggies hair... our other lab already has a shaved leg, now he can have a clipped back...
fingers crossed its nothing, but not sure how he would get a cut there- maybe going under barbed wire, but he is on the lead most of the time so unlikely... hmm...
will take a pic once clipped... nicee!

Ok, just trimmed around the area... its like a flap!?
Its really strange, it has like hair under the flap as well, its not pussy any more but its really odd...
I thought maybe it was a scab but its quite hard, but doesn't feel like a lump :s
eurgh. poor doggie :(
