What should I feed?

I have a thoroughbred who I am currently breaking and my YO told me to feed him a handful of healthy hooves as she said 'you don't want him feeling well' which is understandable but I personally feel he has dropped a bit too much weight considering we are coming into winter.

He can be excitable and nervous (I got him semi-wild out of a field in July) so I don't want a high energy feed but I want something I can feed along side the remainder of the chop to encourage weight gain

Thank you :)

Blue chip original balancer and alfa a oil did the best job on my horse & I have to be careful that I don't give him too much energy.

I would probably swap the alfa a oil for a normal chaff at first and see how he goes. Although expensive the balancer lasted me ages and did make a massive difference in the space of a month. Going to put mine back on it for a few weeks as he has dropped a bit with the change in weather.

Prob best to call the feed companies helplines they go through all sorts of questions with you and can advise you. Have you weighed him? Or weigh tape?

I had this with my tb and after taking lots of advice about balancers its best to start on a low protein one- equilibria 500 is lower than blue chip and cheaper- hasn't turned my tb nuts yet and i know a few who have had to come off blue chip as the protein seems too high in it for most tbs.

Also i would be tempted to just change his chaff to alfa a oil and give a good scoop for each feed. The oil will help put calories in but slow release so will reduce him gettin wound up
