well for me, I would expect at least a call or text to tell me the weather is warm and would I like to have the rug taken off...I'd appreciate this more than having a horse sweat and be uncomfotable...the people in my yard are all lovely and we all look out for each others horses, if it's pouring down and I wouldnt be due up for aq bit someone would bring my horse in, or even if he was standing at gate, they would bring him in...I really dont mind this at all...we are all on DIY too...we are a very close family kinda yard!
I'm on part livery and I suppose that if horse was charging around field so YM could see, I would expect her to try and remove rug... but it's a tricky one because I pay for her to sort my horse in the morning etc but I also don't expect her to go running around the fields checking rugs every hour during the day. If it was a one off I wouldn't be fussed. If it was happening regularly I would ask for change etc.
However DIY is Do It Yourself. The YM has no responsibility to do anything with the horse imo.
To be honest, I try and discuss most situations when people come on livery. If they are happy for more to use my judgement, if they wish to be left alone, are they happy to pay etc etc.
I dont have time in the day to text all owners before I do or dont do something, and also most people at work dont answer till a break, by which time I am normally on to another job.
The DIY in question should maybe think ahead and leave instructions, or discuss with YM to maybe check horse at said time and do what is necessary, that way both parties are happy.
My duty of care is to the horses, however I only step in if it is a welfare situation, after all everyone has a different view on how to keep their horse and what way is best. From an insurance point of view unless I am specifically asked to do something for a horse or part of a livery agreement I am then fully responsible if something then happens to said horse due to my actions, however well meaning at the time.
Maybe the owner should text the YM if she is concerned about the weather or as said leave prior instructions so everyone knew how to plan there day.
Ah Scally, in our hyperthetical situation, given the distance away, the owner does not know the weather at the yard is considerably different to where the owner is
. YM is aware of the work distance situation. This is on a yard where there are no part or full liveries, so the YM is not up to his/her neck in it

I find it interesting. If 'our yard' had gone ahead, then I know that I'd have spent the days pottering about, sweeping, weeding, seeing to fences, keeping an eye on horses whether they be DIY or otherwise, fixing fences, etc etc etc., so to me, it would be the norm to text owners if I saw an issue with their horse/s. Maybe I would have run myself into an early armchair!
I always thought it would be nice to have a yard & potter about seeing to horses. Truth is, that there are far too many things to do on a yard so I reckon you'd never get round to looking at everyones horses. More's the pity.
I'm on DIY with services so I pay my YO to turn out my horse in morning for me or bring in if shes out in summer. She rugs up or removes rug if appropriate according to the weather. But if I saw to my horse in the morning i'd prefer a txt from my YO. Wouldnt like her to leave horse sweating and I trust her judgement as she wouldnt remove rugs unnecessarily too
Gosh pottering about, I dream of a quite peaceful day, however my day consists of 7 -9 or 10pm and even then when sat down for tea someone will ring or come to the door.
But I love the job.
I suppose every situation is seen differently by owners, outsider and yard managers. The best we can do as owners and yard owners is have a plan in place if something happens or changes from a normal day

Our YM spends a certain amount of time building new stables, so I guess that's the time that if I had a yard I'd be spending sweeping/weeding/pottering, etc.

Wish we'd got the yard we went for, but hey, can't have everything we want in life
don't have a YM as there are only 3 of us on the yard, but if the scenario happened, any of the 3 of use would take off the rug for any of the others, and not be expected to text/call. To be honest we all respect each others knowledge and know the weather can change quickly.
If she had a spare moment, then a text would be nice. However, not really important. If the horse had collapsed and was dying of heatstroke, then action would be necessary. However, I would also look at the weather forecast the night before and make sure I didn't rug up if it said fine! Saying that, ours have stood out in rainstroms with no rugs and not complained (although they did get rubbed down and rugged when they came in).
Spot on Scally. I am also a YO on a 40 box yard. DIY is exactly that as far as I am concerned, only recently I did a few things in the horses best interest only to find that when the owner was charged the fee for rugs on/off etc it wasnt paid & I was told the services hadnt been requested. So if owners want assisted livery they should ask, & pay for it. It's a business not a charity.
My horse is on DIY and I don't expect my YM/YO to get involved unless there is a welfare issue. I'm lucky in that I live and work quite close to the yard so if it does get too hot/starts raining etc during the day I can go up on my lunch and put rugs on/take off. But I also know YO would do it for me if I just texted and asked, and I'd be charged for it, which is fair enough as it's an extra service. Morning duties I share with another DIY-er and I make sure my horse has rugs on if it's expected to rain the next day so she doesn't have to do it, but if it turned out to be hot when she got there she'd text and ask if I wanted it off.
i'd be getting a new rain sheet as i wouldnt expect a grazing horse to sweat up under one!

You are joking? Over-rugged horses sweat up all the time under rugs, and rainsheets are the worst because they have no wicking layer between the horse and the waterproof bit. Yes, they are breathable, but they can only cope with so many g of water per minute (much like a goretex jacket is breathable but can 'wet out' from the inside because it can only cope with so much) - that's not a fault in the fabric, it's a product of what the material can cope with, and though horse rugs don't always have a label telling you what they can wick through, decent human jackets always do.
Back to OP - I leave pretty specific instructions purely because my horse is a v hot chap and does not need rugging when lots of others do. If it were taking a rug off, then nope, I would not be cross, I would not expect a text and I would expect to pay. If on DIY I also would not be cross if I came up and found this had not been done. However rug my horse when I have not put a rug on it at your peril!
I think being a YO/YM must be a thankless task and I would not want to do it, and this shows the need for v good contracts IMO.
As a yard-owner with 16 DIY liveries, many of whom work thorughout the day, this is a common issue. Usually, I'll only remove rugs etc if I think that the horse is distressed and I always text the owner or leave a note in our yard diary to let them know. Luckily, we have a great bunch of people at the moment who look out for each other and their horses so it is rarely a problem and, after all, most people don't object to help that is coming from a helpful and supportive (not interfering!) place! In fact, I'm always grateful when my owners do the same for my horses! However, it does depend on your crowd and unfortunately, we have had the occasional owners in the past who wouldn't let anyone else touch their horse and took any friendly help as unsaid criticism - needless to say, I quickly encouraged them to move somewhere else! Human nature, I suppose...
I would not expect that service from a DIY yard but would expect it from a Full Livery Yard.
Can you just imagine 100 acre fields full of 30 horses... you text 25 owners but cant get through to the other 5..... so you take 10 horses rugs off - pushing a wheelbarrow around field or on your quad bike.... - leave 15 rugs on and the 5 you cant get hold of - you use your judgement. Ok you have a rational owner like me - what ever was best for horse.. you get some like one of our liveries - she would go spare - mind you she wont help anyone - my horse once got legs stuck through a gate - she carried on fetched her own horse and "mentioned" it in passing that there was a horse stuck in the gate..
Thankless job - would not want it if you paid me a million quid a week. I would love to do the job as i love being around horses but i could not stand the idiots that sometimes attach themselves to said horses.

YMs make the rules and keep the peace if they're any good.
They also provide services and buy in supplies. As rug changing is a service, I wouldn't expect YM to do rug changing for a DIY customer. I've not been on a DIY yard for years, but IIRC liveries used to do each other favors like whipping rugs off, chucking more hay in, etc, without texts, just looking out for each others horses.
