What show class do I enter?

Hi guys, so I want to get into showing this summer but im not all to sure what to do with roger! he is 16.3, 9 year old dutch x tb. he is very flashy and loves showing, works lovely and last sunday he went perfectly for the judge when the judge rode him. ive added a few pictures of him, oh and if im turned out wrong in any way, please tell me! thanksss

Coloured?

He would probably be ok for WH too... if he jumps well! I wouldnt go for show hunter though, I don't think he's refined enough for that.

I am no expert on showing, but after reading a post on here a while ago (I think it was one of FMM's!)... you may be slightly better off with a white girth. Where his is at the minute looks all white, and the white girth would blend in a bit better, rather than "chopping" him up.

Dependant on class, you will also need spurs, dummy ones can be used if required.
 
Coloured, ridden horse/hunter classes

Can you pull his tail?

Martingale stopss off your reins

Can you plait on the other side?

For showing a double bridle and spurs are correct but if just local level showing or novice classes then you are fine in your snaffle/no spurs

Thanks for your comments, really helpful! we are taking a break from jumping at the moment (which is why we are showing) so working hunter wouldnt really work haha! with the girth, he is brown on one side and white on the other, so which ever girth i choose he will still be chopped which is a bit annoying but never mind!

I have no idea how to pull a tail, but my friend said she will do it for me, yep can switch his plaits over, and im sure ill be able to get the stops off. not sure what he would think of a double, the closest ive got to a double is showing him in a pelham double reins haha (cheating i know!). but thanks for your help, its all a lot less stressful than eventing!!
 
I would keep the brown girth, it is fine on him.

A pelham is also correct if he goes well in it, not all hoses go in a double bridle.
 
On the last pic has he been stripped down in a ridden class or are you in an in hand class? If you're in an in hand class it is more correct to wear trousers :)
 
No advice but I'd edit your post and remove the pictures quick, it is against the rules to post watermarked images and you'll get a warning from TFC. :)
 
Oh dear, I didnt even think about the watermark, cant seem to find an edit or delete button tho :S! In the last photo I had stripped him down in a riding class, could never do all that running for an in hand class lol! and I will probably try to borrow a friends double and see what he thinks, if not I'll just stick to the pelham
 
Hi Hannah, he's a lovely chap :)
In addition to others comments, keep all 'plain' - remove those martingale stoppers off the reins, plaits over, pull tail etc
If you can try to 'shape' yourself too (sorry, hope this doesn't come out wrong :o ) and get a well fitting bra to support or uplift at the front, to make your jacket have a tidy line down the front & from the sides. Then you will also come taller in the saddle too - rather than dropping and rounding your shoulders.
Usually one thing to remember with showing is to 'think grand' & carry yourself :)

ha yes its not the best fitting show jacket in the world, this was a very last minute decision to enter and I'd left my jacket at uni! but yes i do look pretty slumped in that particular photo, it was just so hot!

I can understand that. I ended up suffering from heat exhaustion in my tweed at the weekend.

I agree with the others that hunter classes and coloured classes are the way to go.

Ditto the martingale stops/plaits on the otherside/pull tail ideas.

In my opinion I'd stick with a brown girth. Far more workmanlike - white girths tend to be a very showy thing usually seen on delicate little pencil legged types.

Other things you can do to neaten your turnout:

Next time you replace your hat, try and get a navy velvet one with flesh coloured straps if you really want to take up showing. Your current one is fine for local level, but if you want to start doing higher level shows, a blue one would be more correct.

Wearing a hairnet is great, but you should try and tie your hair into a small neat bun that sits underneath your hat, rather than a looser ponytail. It'll give the back of your neck/head a much more elegant profile. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can sow the tails of the ribbon on the back of your hat to it, so that they don't stick out like that.

A coloured shirt would be a bit better than a white one. Purchase some cheap yellow dusters from tesco and toss them in the wash with your current one and it should come up a nice pale yellow colour. Cream and pale blue are also popular colours.

I think you might have a PC badge on your lapel? Personally I'd remove it to keep the whole image neat and tidy. You could also try a slightly brighter coloured tie if you've access to some, but your current one is perfectly acceptable too.

Finally, try and teach yourself to do quarter markings. He as a lovely dark coloured behind, so play about with different patterns and see what suits him best!

Well done though - you both look very smart already. These are just little things that'll finish you off!
 
Thankyou that was very helpful!! I think this year I am going to enter all the qualifiers for CHAPS and BPSA but not actually register, just so I can get a feel for it really, and see if we are totally not in their league!

Love the idea with the dusters, will definately try that one! With the navy hat, is that still okay even though there is no blue running through the jacket (I literally have no idea about this work of thing!)? I am planning on practising some quarter markers this weekend, could go badly haha!
 
Hats are...an interesting subject.

Black velvet is to be avoided, because you are a lady. A lady would not be wearing black unless she was in mourning, and if she was in mourning she would not be riding! Now please don't think you need to rush out and replace your current hat. No one is going to kick you out the ring for it - I showed in one for years without a problem.

Navy with the flesh straps is the traditional and most commonly seen hat in the ring. It's also the most flexible of hat colours and goes with pretty much everything. I wear one with my green tweed. You could also go for green velvet and brown velvet, which are beginning to make more of an appearance, but right now they are more often seen in the m&m classes, so will stand out in a show hunter class.
