what show classes would suit my coloured horse?

I really want to get my little man out showing this year - he's 5 next month and just about 15.1hh. I think I'll do one or two in hand and then try ridden (as he's very spooky/sharp so definitely needs to experience the show ring without me on board first!!)

However having spoken to various horsey friends everyone struggles to place him in a 'type' - I'm happy to clip his feathers off and pull his mane if needed, but want to make sure I get it right before doing anything!

Can any showing experts out there suggest what class to try him in? Obviously for little shows he can just go in a coloured class, but some of my local shows don't have a coloured class.

Also any pointers on turnout (clipping, trimming, tack etc) would be appreciated.

Here are some recent pics - for some reason I look really tall on him out hunting, I think this is because it was taken from on top of a 17hh horse!

A similar type (pulled, trimmed and plaitted) but a hand smaller won the general hunter class at our local show. That would be worth a go. Definately riding club horse too, in which anything goes really. Working hunter if he jumps well too.

He's super! I love him:D

I'd trim and plait up- Trim his legs too.. Coloured classes, riding horse classes, Also working hunter- depending on your age- under 25 i think- you can compete him as in intermediate because hes between 14.2 and 15.2? Dont quote me on that though! He looks smashing!

Ok great, thanks! I'll get pulling and trimming...

with light feathers like these (in the summer he's got sort of Welsh D feathers) is it best to trim with scissors or clip? The fronts of his legs don't really need trimming so I'm a bit wary of taking the clippers to him and making a mess!!
