Hi everyone

Im a bit of a showing numpty and have recently been given a horse to ride and compete and Im wondering what classes we could do.

This is him, he is only 4 and not long backed so wont be going out straight away but he is very sweet and willing so hopefully do some low pressure stuff with him before the end of the summer.

Thanks for any suggestions :)

I'm probably being a bit of a numpty too but does a horse's markings make any difference in a coloured showing class? I thought it was all about conformation and how well the horse goes?!!!!!!!!!!!

They've got to look right though too, ideally you want something as equally marked as possibly, and no 'illusions' to the eye from markings that can 'eye alter' it's conformation from first glance [some markings can change the initial appearance of the hind quarters, neck, shoulder, etc]....and it depends on the judge's personal preference really! [Piebald, skewbald, More white, more colour, etc]

I'd say go for it :) He'll spruce up quite smart I'd think.
It might be the angle of the photo, but he looks possibly cappy in his hocks, which will be marked down for though.

Thanks guys :) Do you think we would be ok in a ridden showing class? Most i have seen ahve just had big versions of show ponies, or cob classes as technically he is a cob haha? I cant wait to have a go and no doubt I will be asking for tack and outfit recommendations before long

Coloureds (pull that mane ;) :D!)

how high???

lw hunter
workers

height dependant and dependant also on the level in which the owners want competed at :D best of luck

Depends what ridden showing class you're going for?

Generally speaking, and there ARE exceptions obviously like anything, coloureds don't really fare well in hunters/riding horse/hack/etc, unless they are truly exceptional and standout-ish. And the breeds they generally use for them also, coloureds aren't a huge colour trait in them.

Cob's you'd be stuck for as you then couldn't do any other showing really, as he'd need to be hogged, etc. He's not really a true cobby type as he's quite fine built in comparison to what's out there. Also, how big is he? He looks fairly tall to measure in more cobs.

Go for coloureds, plaited and trimmed up :)

Yep, defo coloured classes.

In terms of CHAPS, they definintely do not take markings into account UNLESS there are two horses on equal marks and then they make take them into consideration.

At local level, I think the judges generally look at the overall picture including the markings...but I think you could do quite well...the only slight doubt is he does look to have capped hocks, which would mark him down quite a bit in the conformation marks.

He doesn't look at all heavy/hairy and I would be tempted to show him as a non-native and pull mane, trim feathers etc....unless thats a 'trick' of the pics and he is alot more cobby in 'real life'???

He is quite fine for a cob really. Ooo will start CHAPS research then and see what we have around here. Mostly just want to get him out and about seeing things and getting used to the atmospere so will be keeping it low level(low pressure in theory but I will be extremely nervous haha)
