My mums horse with novice rider, pic below.

We are aiming for local agricultural show, but want to make sure we get the right class.

Friend is a good little rider but more used to hacking / hunting / XC type of thing than showing. This was her first go. He has soundness issues, he’s ok but he’s old and we don’t want to do too much in the school but I think I can train her up a bit on my horse.

Options being (I think!):
Local rider (sounds a bit of a non-class!)
Ridden hunter (might be a bit too pro?)
Veteran (maybe sensible option but not sure if a bit pro too?)

Any other thoughts? They have all the usual showing classes..

I would try either or both the ridden hunter and the veteran classes. I would swap the blue gloves for wash leather and loose the sheepskin numnah, perhaps replace it with a smallish brown one. I can't tell if your rider has a stock or a tie, but would suggest a tie and a pale but not white shirt. Have fun and enjoy the day :)
 
Id go for the ridden hunter and veteran... additional comment I would trim those feathers on the legs a lot more... the back ones especially being white make his hocks look puffy/swollen....
 
Great, thanks folks.

She is wearing a stock. It was a bit of a mix up of what we could get together! Also might get a "joint" hat as I'm planning to do a couple of workers on mine.

He's got a jumping saddle on which isn't quite right? My GP fits him so we'll get that on next time.

THIS!!! I saw this straight away! That is the biggest thing that stands out to me.

Get rid of sheepskin numnah as already suggested. Gloves need to be leather (brown).

Hat could do with being a proper velvet one to be honest, but not essential.

Can't quite see from the pic what bit you are using?

I'd also like to see the noseband dropped down the face a bit... Looks a tad high to me
 
Moomin, he's got one of those "look like a double but aren't" bits. He's faffing with his head because it was hot and he head shakes a bit.. also a brat! Normally ridden in phelham with D's (but that wouldn't look as posh!).

Yep, yep, agree with all comments. :) Apart from nose band one I'm afraid!
 
His tail could do with pulling a tad lower.
The rider should also wear spurs in a hunter class.
Less plaits in the mane (no more than 11 absolute maximum)
I would clip the white socks short.
Straight cut saddle to show his shoulder.
Rider also looks as if she is riding on the curb rein rather than the snaffle.

I would say Hunter and Veteran. Most of Hunter classes have a prize for the best local rider (they usually have to wear a white armband) rather than having a 'Local Rider' class.

Is it a rugby pelham?

If so and you plan to keep showing in it then get a double bridle, so that you can attatch the slip to the snaffle ring.

Personally I show in a pelham, as that is what she wears daily, I use two sets of reins, never roundings. If he's more settled in the pelham, then just use that with two reins. ;)

I would advise the rider to swap her reins around, so that the curb rein is carried above the snaffle rein in the hand. this way she will ride mainly off the snaffle rein. Also either use a thinner or plaited rein on the curb so you can identify it easily.

Noseband looks ok to me, just neaten up with a more discrete numnah and go for cream jodhs rather than white, agree with other posters re. shirt and tie, and brown leather gloves. Bit more trimming around the fetlocks.

My mum (who's horse he is) doesn't think he is nice enough for a ridden hunter?? If he is she would like me to ride him.

Is he not a bit short / chunky?

It takes a bit of practice getting used to riding with double reins. ;)

To be honest, I'd enter him in whatever I could: more about getting out and about and getting experience than prizes!

I remember as a kid I took my horse to a nig Agri show... entered her in the large riding horse class exceeding as I was convinced she was 15.1! We looked like scruffy little tykes next to all the others in the class, and we came last, but the judge was polite, and gave me feedback, and my horse behaved. I'd rather that than miss out because I was worried about what others thought.

At local level I'd just enter everything!

ets: how big is he?
