What showing colours (browband, hairbow and buttonhole) should we go for?

Hi Guys,

Its that time of year that I start thinking about the summer season, I really can't decided what colours to go for (but have found an awesome lady to make the set up at a very reasonable price!!).

I have a grey tweed jacket, grey/ black hat (the only one I could find to fit my bucket head comfortably!!) and black tack on a bright/ reddy bay small tb, I hope to do the RoR flat classes and maybe some sort of riding horse class (or whatever anyone suggests really!).

Any tips/ ideas etc.

We will be in a snaffle (unless we progress to some more esteemed shows), he has built up a lot since this photo and goes in a much more 'UP'/ correct way.

Grey tweeds are frowned upon in showing classes, as are black hats I'm afraid.

A green tweed with blue hat is the norm - but if you are just a local level, the judges won't be too picky on this.

I think chestnuts with some gold, and maybe burgundy, I wouldn't have a button hole or hairbow - they don't look good on adults..

I'd have a tie that matches your browband - as that will help bring everything together :)

I had my little bay mare in a burgundy, cream and gold browband, I wore a navy hat, brown tweed with a burgundy stripe, corn shirt and a burgundy tie with gold spots.

Completely agree with this. But green or brown tweed. Bottle green and gold might also be nice. The button holes and ribbons look pretty on the kiddies but Im not sure youd get away with it, Id save some money if I were you :).

I am swaying towards a red/white/blue or a pink/navy/silver combo.

Will give the bow and buttonhole a miss then but the hat and jacket are there to stay (I wanted a navy/flesh straps hat but couldn't find any that fitted my head comfortably and a normal tweed looked awful with the grey hat... catch 22!!)

We are only likely to do local level :)

Hey hes gorg looks a little lime my tb lol just to let u no if ur gonna do ror or riding hirde classes u might want to invest in a mavy jacket much prefered in fine tbs xx iv had many colours in mine he looks the best in red and gold xxx

I guess I will have to see how he gets on in the kit we have now and if he goes well maybe invest in something more correct.

I hope to do some workers to (in our plain tack) but his jumping is a little to slow yet!

A navy jacket is not preferred in Riding Horse classes they are allowed but you will find the majority wear tweed. Only Hacks are required to wear navy.

I have a Red white and blue velvet browband and a matching tie for Riding Horse classes on my mare my jacket also has a subtle red overcheck

I don't think I will stick out to much, it is a smart/ nicely cut jacket (not the one in thepicture!) in a subtle colour.

I am loving your browband (picture has been stolen and sent to the browband making lady to be made up in lilac/grey/white/silver theme to tie in with my illegal jacket :) )- hope thats ok???

Any top tips? You look like you know your stuff

My top tip is to smile even if you think everything is going to pot keep smiling and carry on because in all likelihood if you do that the judge may not even notice that things aren't going exactly as you planned them.

Find a good space on the go round but you can overtake if necessary but do it behind the judge.

Work to your horse strengths if they have a good trot then try to show that off if on the other hand their canter is better reduce the amount of trot and show off the canter But remember to keep it short and sweet no endless circles as the judge will just get bored.

A good gallop will always get you extra points too and do the gallop in front of the judge not behind the line so that they have a better view.

Hi,

I'm aware black isn't preferable but for a few local shows in the summer (unless the unlikely happens and he is a huge hit with the judges) I expect it will be ok (and it seems a bit OTT to but everything all over again!!).

Thanks for that, his trot is lovely and being a mini- tb doesn;t take to much persuading to have a little gallop/ 3/4 canter.

So smile and make like it is what you intended to do all along, I can do this!!

Do I need to take his passport/ racing post print out to do racehorse classes?

Hi, i used to make browbands :) i think with your horses colouring you should go for a dark green, cream and gold with a matching tie :)

I love dark green and gold BUT they were my last horses colours, his stuff is kept in a special box in my room and isn't allowed anywhere near Peej (I am a sentimental old git! So really wanted something different for him to make our own).

I also had a horse in black and white so wouldn't want him in those either.

Please make sure that you put your hair in a net, looks so much better than any form of ponytail etc, no need for the scrunchie/ribbon. Tie and browband colours that match look good.

Hi, I think navy and silver or red, navy and silver would be nice. The silver would go with your jacket a bit better. And a matching tie and scrunchie always goes well.

I was intending to do my standard base of neck bun in a hair net (don't know how people can compete without!!!) with the bow or scrunchie (that I hadn't thought of before) on the top to hold it together a bit better.

I think I am going to go for a lilac/silver/grey/white combination as I think the lighter shades would brighten up his pretty but plain face and compliment my illegal/ immoral jacket nicely.

I love the darker colours (reds etc) but just think they would over power his midget face a bit??
