what side should the ramp be on a trailer?

We have noticed that trailer we are looking to buy has an ab-standard jockey door, on an I for Williams the jockey door is on the passengers side, on this trailer it is on the drivers side. If this better or worse? Thanks x
 
I always prefer the ramp on the left side then in an emergency you aren't unloading into the middle of the road.
 
Having it on the left also gives a larger horse (who should be travelled on the right) more room to unload.

I purposely had my ifor built with a ramp on the left which made a huge difference to my nervous traveller who would rush, knock hip and then rush more next time when it was on the right!
 
Mine's on the left, so that if needs be you can unload onto the verge of a road. It's actually French though so I guess they designed it to unload into the road...
However, my horse prefers to reverse out, so front ramp not an issue :P
 
I don't mind. Its much the same to me. Sometimes im a passenger and i hop out and stick my head in the jockey door, other times im the driver and i hop out and stick my head in the top door. lol
 
Mines a Richardson..think they all had them on the left, reason being if you need to pull in to road side and unload you are away from the traffic. Downside is when you go to shows and there are loads of ifors you need to make sure you leave enough room for 2 ramps between trailers if that makes sense.
 
Prefer on the left (passenger) side. My husband once came across an IW that was stopped on a hill, ramp down into the road, and horse lying fatally injured in the road - the clutch had gone on the towing vehicle and the horse had been unloaded into the road and was hit by a car. Not a pretty sight. At last IW are now building with ramps on the left. I agree hunting it can be difficult to unload into the verge/hedge, but surely must be preferable to unloading into the road with a fresh horse?
 
You chose when you order an IF what side it's on .
It's irrelevant to me as I never allow horses out the front mine are trained to reverse out .
 
I prefer the left as the bigger horse is on the right so it makes it easier to get it out. On the odd occasion you can't get out the front I would just go out the back or you could point the other way if you really wanted.
 
I am of the opinion it really doesn't matter - your horse should be taught to back off a trailer. I know people bang on about ramps being on the left so you don't unload into the road, but really?? what if you have a problem on one of our typical English country lanes? are you going to unload into a hedge or a ditch??!! If the trailer is perfect for you, buy it, don't get hung up on what side the ramp is!
 
Prefer mine on the right really.. not sure why but I just do. :) I understand the logic of the left side however, if you are in an emergency then you would like above poster, back them out and take them to safety.. I wouldn't want to unload my horse onto the road, either side!

Or you can be like the idots i got at one show who parked their car along side me, then reversed so they were in an L shape blocking both my ramp AND back door. Then proceeded to leave the trailer and go away! Lucky my little fella is only 30" and could jump in/out the jockey door.
 
Mine is on the left. It suits us as my horse that travels on the left can unload first, which she prefers. The one I travel on the right can unload without swinging the partition but if I had a bigger horse than her then unloading to the left would also give it more room. I bought the trailer from my neighbour who needed a left hand ramp to fit his 17hh down as he couldn't make the turn on a right hand ramp.
 
Mine is on the right, Ifor 510. Interestingly I spent 2 hours trying to get my horse into a trailer which had the ramp on the left. She's very particular about loading, over the years her trailer of choice is an ifor 510 hence that's what I bought!

I understand the reasoning behind this but not often have i ever been able to pull over with enough room to get a ramp down! saying that it makes no difference to me as mine will back out of a trailer and i have a lorry, which is ironically left loading!
