My cob's in a 42" girth on my close contact jumping saddle, so what size does anyone guess he'd need for a dressage saddle? Not bought the saddle yet but wouldn't mind having all the gear ready so I can try it on before buying - and as it will be pre-owned I can't expect to be loaned a girth.

By the way, we're really, really rubbish at dressage, but somehow it's become addictive ......

Thanks in advance.

It's quite variable as will depend on the length of the flaps/straps of the saddle and how wide your horse is underneath (i.e. the 42" could be taken up by depth rather than width)

Perhaps buy a couple beforehand and make sure they're returnable?

Thanks, that makes sense. Had a root about in my collection of spare stuff last night and found some pony girths that will do for trying on until I find out for sure.

If you're using a fitter they'll have demo girths so you can get an idea, but bear in mind you want the longest overall length that doesn't wrinkle your saddle pad, but that the measurement doesn't include any padding beyond the buckles which is what makes it more complicated. I wish they'd come with two measurements! I would narrow it down then order at least two lengths, sending back those that aren't right.
