I have two sizes of saddle...

I am 5ft 9/10 and on my 16.3hh IDxTB I use an 18" M/W, but on my 17hh WBxTB the saddle fitter I have just had out thinks I will get away with a 17.5"...

Thanks,

Its more to do with the size of your backside and the length of the horses back. If you have a fat arse then you will need a larger seat or if your horse has a long back then you can use a larger seat saddle to cover it up.

To answer your original question I am 5'5 and ride my mare in a 17.5 inch saddle.

LOL... I don't have a big bottom

I am 5'4" and have a 17" saddle (am selling my 17.5 DH one as too roomy for me). I think it is less to do with the size of your ar$e and more to do with the length of your leg from hip to knee.

5ft 10 and im in a 16.5 seat :| Did have alterations done to the flaps to accomadate my length of leg from hip to knee though.

I have a short coupled horsey but have no problems at all with the seat

Did opt for a slightly flatter seat to be sure though.

Hmmm without going and finding a tape measure i dont have a clue what i am lol. Im quite "leggy" though if that helps.

I have a wow saddle and the flaps were lengthened a touch and were also rotated forwards slightly to give more room between where my hip is and the point at which the knee hits the knee block (to make sure i wasnt pushed too far to the back of the saddle).

Have absolutly no issues at all although i was rather sceptical when they first told me what seat size the horse needed.

My horsey is 16.1hh but the saddler said they'd never seen such a short coupled horse :| Was rather a lot of tweaking done to make the saddle suitable for us both but its perfect now

I am 5'5" and have no backside to speak of, although I do have long ish legs. I ride in a 17.5" but that is only because the saddles I have were bought for both me and my Mum (she's about 5'8" and "normal" size, with "normal" length legs). I find my friend's 17" dressage saddle a better fit for me, but I don't think a 17" would suit my huge long-backed ID. I can cope fine with the extra half an inch but I do like to be wedged in my friend's saddle rather than lounging about in mine!

Aye the horses back has to be considered. No point having a tiny weeny saddle on a large horse. It just looks stupid :P

Equally larger seats on a smaller horse cause enormous problems to their backs :| As i can testify since mine had been ridden in 17.5 until I got him and had really badly bruising over his kidneys

His flatwork improved immensly when I switched down... much less hollowing.

saddle size relies quite a lot on how long your leg is from the point of hip, to knee. rather than how fat your a*se is!! i have an 18" ideal and am approx 5'10. however i feel just as comfortable in 17.5 and even 17" saddles. Although i do prefer my 'armchair'!

ETA - i didnt read the question properly! all saddles mentioned are either GP, Event or jumping saddles.
