I like small horses, around the 15.2hh mark and certainly no bigger than 16hh. I also prefer fine boned, pretty horses as opposed to handsome chunky monkeys. Its probably because im quite slim with small bones myself. I also have artheritis in my hands and wrists so I dont like anything that takes a hold or is heavy to ride. Id rather slightly too sensitive than too steady, again because they are less physical effort to ride. Im lazy
15hh to 16hh I'm only 5ft 1in but i cant stand rising trot on something with little steps and ive fallen off small ponies where as horses i manage to stay on.
I started of riding a 17.2hh this year, then a 16.2hh now ride a 15.3hh and i feel most comfortable riding her out of the 3. I can't really ride anything much smaller than her as i'm so tall!
I'm most comfortable on the 16.2hh relatively chunky TB at my yard... I find his longer stride very comfy, but I'd never be able to get on him from the ground! Scooby is very comfortable too, but as he's only 14.2hh it took quite a while to get used to his shorter stride. I certainly feel like I look better on the 16.2hh, as I'm 5'7 so although not hugely tall, I still feel a bit silly on Scoobs!
16.2 upwards!
By no means am I tall (5'7/8), but learning to ride as I grew up I was always put on big horses, and so now that is what I feel most comfortable on.
I love my 18.1 chunky monkey!
I like to ride 16h to 17h horses but with my RA I can't manage to rug and tack up if too big so compromised on 15.3h this time. However he rides much bigger so suits me. As I am paranoid about 'not being small' I prefer how I look on a 16.2+ slightly chunky, but with dodgey hips can't ride them anymore lol
A much older friend told me that as you get older your horses get smaller ??
a 16.3 tb, or a 16.1 part-bred. anything smaller i look a bit daft on as they don't take my leg up, anything bigger isn't clever/handy enough for my liking. i know, i'm very fussy!
I used to love riding all the little ponies as I used to showjump, however when I started eventing I was riding a 17.3 ID and for me to come off a 15.1 to that is a massive step!! however I have never felt so safe and he made the jumps seem so small lol !!
But Ive just brought a 2 year old and he is currently 15.2 so should make 16hh which is my perfect size
For showjumping its great having a small flying pony so you can do all the turns but then for eventing you need something just that big bigger to do all the 3 phases!
