I have a 17 inch dressage saddle (really its an Icelandic saddle but its v similar to dressage) and I'm wanting to buy a lemieux saddle pad. Would a S/M or an L fit better?
I ride a small horse (13.2). I see most people reccomend size Full or L for Icelandics, but would an L look huge on her?? I dont want the pad to be too small for the saddle either... Thanks!

Surely a s/m would be the equivalent of pony/cob. A 17” saddle is a normal adult kind of size.
A huge amount or rubs/saddle sores are caused by too small pads. No harm can be caused by a tad too big, unlike the reverse. I’d always rather bigger.
Go full for sure.

They come up small but every saddle is different. If you have no rear gussets then you're more likely to fit into the S/M for example, as the panel is shorter, but really you have to measure. Measure the space your saddle takes up on a numnah then contact the company and ask them for measurements, you MUST have that space left in between sheepskin trims, if that's the design of pad.

Sheepskin trims? I am talking about a saddle pad not a halfpad. I don’t own any saddle pads or anything like that so I can’t measure my current ones.

Many people buying LeMieux are buying sheepskin lined ones with trim, numnahs and squares, not just half pads, but I did say IF that's the design of the pad.

Get a blanket, a towel, or even measure it on a saddle rack, how much space does the saddle take up, front to back? This is the ONLY sure fire way to determine pad size needed.

I've found that a 17" saddle (three different saddles on two different horses, one of which was an Icelandic) needs a full size LeMeuix pad. I also found that a Wintec dressage saddle (not dissimilar in shape to an Icelandic saddle) is a good fit with one of the old style saddle-shaped LeMeuix pads. They do a dressage shaped one which is quite straight cut. On a small horse like an Icelandic I think the big dressage squares end up looking massive - these give you the length under the saddle without covering up most of your horse!

Also if you haven't already come across them then Kramer Equestrian do some quite nice Icelandic pads - I haven't got one but I have other saddle pads from them and they are very nice quality. They sometimes do free shipping weekends so worth keeping an eye out.

Thank you! I do usually ride with an Icelandic Topreiter gelpad, but I want a Lemieux pad because I like the colours and style more

I have a 14hh Welsh in a 17” saddle and fits a s/m perfectly the full drowns her, but then someone at my yard has a 13hh cob and 16’ saddle and needs a full, I think it really varies unfortunately ,might need to try one on!

Yep, varies massively. I have some 16.5 short panel saddles on Mattes small, most 16.5 on a medium, but some would be too long if the pad had sheepskin trim, and that's within ONE brand. Ignoring the individual saddle and simply looking at a generic 17" saddle isn't the way to get the best fit.
