Hi all,

Following on from previous thread about our stable-building plans(!) just wondering what size overhang you have on your stables? And perhaps more importantly, what size would you have given the choice? We would have liked an American barn but planners say no, so we're after the next best thing! I'd like to be able to muck out/tack up in the dry & not sure how big an overhang we'd need in order to do this. Standard size seems to be either 3 foot or 4 foot but the suppliers we're looking at go up to 6 foot. What would you wise people recommend?!

Hello again!

My overhangs are 4'. They are fine for keeping the horses reasonably dry when tied up outside, especially in the corner (which you may or maynot have, depending on whether you separate the blocks). They don't need any support poles. The best thing about our overhangs is that they are hollow, so each stable has a shelf that goes into the overhang. I keep all my clean, bagged rugs up there - out of view if any burglar should look into the stables and they were very handy for storage when we had DIYS!

Hello back!

Thanks for your ideas. Loving the idea of hollow overhangs so I can squirrel away my rug collection out of sight of burglars (& OH - he doesn't need to know about that particular vice at least!) Progress on the l-shaped block btw - am now thinking of going for a 16x12, a 12x12 & a couple of pony size boxes (10x12) on the other side so that the overall square footage stays within the limits imposed by the council. Cunning eh?!

I've also been ogling pics of your hardstanding - we're thinking of doing similar on the basis that the planings will grass over in the summer so it won't actually look like acres of concrete. Should keep both planners & OH happy - ta da!

Thanks again for your thoughts - I'm basically just copying everything you've done :)

I think about a metre. When I was re-building the timber sectional stables I got for free, I got a lot of box section that was a cancelled order. They could not resell it because the sheets were an odd size. So I made the roof to fit the sheets! Sorry I couldn't give you are more sensible answer but that is how it happened! I could have done with even more as the over hang is very useful so I'd go for the full six foot so long as it is securely supported. Don't forget snow loading.

I think that idea of four stables within the planning's limits is a fab idea. Our two portable stables are only 11x10, but are great. We had them made as shelters then put a door on them, we use them for large bales of hay - we can get two bales in each.

Yes the hard standing area around my yard is the best thing we ever did. It does grass over (very patchy though) in summer but they soon graze it off totally in winter. It doesn't stand out though, its the colour of mud/soil anyway. If I ever had to move it would be the first thing I would do if I built another yard!

Thanks both - very helpful! Hadn't thought about snow-loading - & we're possibly using supplier from down south so worth pointing out to them! Also good to know that big bales fit in the smaller size stable as we'll have one for storage very much looking forward to no more battles with tarpaulin of a winter's night :)

my outdoor boxes don't have any over hang and this winter they were totally unusable luckily I have some indoor stables too, not as big but they done the job:)
