I'm looking for a supplement to support my mare's dry and easily irritable skin (not allergy induced) anyone got anything they could recommend?? I'd prefer not to feed oils as she's a good doer cob and very reactive to additional fats in her feed. I love the idea of 'natural' supplements and herbs, but am interested in anything that will make my poor girls skin better! Thanks!!

Micronised linseed..and/or Small amount of seaweed (a week). Also try Natural horse supplies and look see what herbs they recommend for sensitive skin, always found them to be good and reasonable prices :)

I would make sure the horse is on a good general balancer or vit/min supplement, including around 1mg selenium (in the form of selenium yeast) per day per 500kg horse.

That would be my absolute starting point before thinking of anything else at all.

A proper strapping and possibly an occasional bath with Sebomed or something similar. Linseed is good for general skin/haircoat health.

Mine get micronized linseed and brewers yeast to support their skin health. Linseed makes their coats shiny and healthy looking. The brewers yeast seems to stave off the worst of the flies in summer and keep mud fever at bay in the winter!

thanks for the fab replies everyone!! Will have a look into all suggestions :)

saffytessa - I always wanted to try brewers yeast on my filly but never got round to it, might give it a go if it keeps mud fever away!!

I don't tend to use balancers as I keep her out 24/7 on very good quality grass, and have always preferred just giving supplements when the Dr Green doesn't seem to be helping - although might give topspec or something similar a go over winter, as it did help the filly's shocking quality hooves and gave her a wonderful shine.

WelshD, that link is fab!! Never heard of that site until now, will definitely be ordering some things from there soon. So cheap!! I also love natural horse supplies as Micky suggested, will have a look in their coat and skin section later on :)
