What sort of budget should I set?

I'm a bit of a lurker on here but just wanted some opinions on a budget for the following horse..

I would most likely be going to the leominster or malvern sales at some point in the winter but before xmas. Looking for between 3 and 6 years old. Would like to do low level BE with the horse after putting lots of work in (don't mind unbacked horses etc as I enjoy that sort of thing and I'm in no rush to be out competing.) I will of course take into account the 6% + VAT and the cost of vetting.

Another concern is the height of the horse, I'm not sure what height range to look for as I'm quite tall at 5ft 9" but not that heavy and I'm in the process of loosing some weight anyway so the weight isn't an issue really.

Any ideas what my budget should be and advise on height etc would be great? :)

I think that as you are asking these questions a sale would not be the best place to go to buy your horse, there will be little opportunity to try any ridden ones properly, it is easy to get carried away at auctions and go for something flashy that may not really suit.

I would look at buying privately, maybe from a stud where you can really see what you are buying without the pressure and rush that happens at sales.

Budget £4k upwards for a correct youngster that needs plenty of bringing on.
There are always bargains out there but most will be cheap for a reason.

Height, around 16.1 is ideal in my view, big enough, provided it has a good depth of girth, to do any job required.
