Hi guys, I'm relatively new on here and I am looking to buy a 14.2hh cob or middleweight pony for my and my daughter to share. I ideally want something that is quite well schooled, not a competition pony but very safe and sensible for hacking and rc events. How much do you think I need for this? Thanks in advance

I suppose it will depend to some extent where you are in the country... but this was the sort of animal I was looking for (although I ended up with somethign slightly different) and I was expecting to pay up to £3k.

I'm not experienced in horsehunting though, and I'm sure more experienced folk will give you better guidance.

Well I have started looking lately for something similar and the price ranges I have seen are from £1k-£3k on average, obviously they can get more expensive but it does depend on the area of the country of course.
Good luck on your search :)

I've got one which I brought for 2k, 7years ago mind you. Schoolmaster 14.2hh Welsh Arab. Done all PC competitions and local shows, then went to HOYS and PUK, however she was 14 so age brought down price

There are some nice ones in the classifieds on here in the £999-£1999 price bracket

Good luck with your search

Thanks for your help guys. I was also thinking around 2.5k for a pony but hoping to get some tack and rugs. I have been looking through but mostly seem to be with dealers and with my past experience I want to stay clear of dealers and so called 'private sellers' but how can you tell if someone is selling the horse on and making out they have had it a long while? I know the passport is a good tell tale but I know some people who have had horses 1 yr + who still don't have their horse in their name. Is there any other tell tale signs that someone hasn't had a horse as long as they have said?

Most people that are selling a genuinely outgrown pony will have loads of photos or videos of their time together, another way to check is to get references from the PC or RC, look for ponies that have been used for PC then it is fairly easy to do research.
Price will depend to some degree on where you are and if you are happy with an older pony, but a safe fairly well schooled 14.2 will hold its value as they are always in demand as suitable for adults as well as children. I would think at least £3000.

Recently sold a pony on behalf of a friend whose daughter had lost interest after owning him nearly 5 years. His flatwork needed a little work, he had a nice jump and was as safe as houses! I advertised him at £3650 and the phone didn't stop ringing, sold him straightaway to a lovely home!

I think your budget is spot on. I've been keeping an eye on that sort lately (but wanted something that would jump) and there was lots for that price...

Re the genuinely much loved pony indications - an overgrown jockey when you go to see the horse always helps. Lots of pictures, with said jockey throughout the years. Lots of rosettes/pc stories. Owners that desperately want to stay in touch or are upset when you say you want them... Supplying tack/rugs etc with the animal - something I always have done - I want to know the horse is going with things that fit it and it is comfy in..

oh dear. Maybe I will need to up my budget a lot :-( there is nothing much about, only green, under weight cobs that look like they have only been broken a few weeks, with dealers. No nice 14.2hh genuine allrounder from genuine homes

It all depends, it's a case of being in the right place at the right time. You could find the right one for £1000, but at the same time he could cost £4000. My lad cost a quarter of what I was expecting to pay, and I couldn't be happier with him. It's not all horror stories when it comes to buying a horse for less than £3k.

As you are in the south east, try Southgate Farm or Clipclop Traders.
Yes they are dealers but very reputable ones at that-just search their names on here and you will find out all you need to know :)
