Well I have decided to get someone to help me with bringing jasper on a bit. He's been lightly backed and is happy to walk with someone on as long as he's being led. Its a friend helping me (she's a freelance trainer/rider) and we have agreed that she will come an hour a day 5 days a week for 2 weeks to begin with.

What sort of change should I be expecting in this time? Know its a daft question but just don't want to expect to much should he be beginning to walk alone in that time? Trotting?

Is he happy to trot on the lunge/ long reins? if so taking the step to start trotting with a rider should not present a problem, unless there is history you have not mentioned, most horses are able to go alone within the first day or two as long as the groundwork has been established and the people involved are experienced to know how far to go and when to take a step back if required.

The only thing I would question is the time each day, I appreciate she may need to be paid for an hour to make it worthwhile but that is probably far too long to be doing anything with him in one go, most need short sessions of less than 1/2 hour otherwise it can be easy to do too much and push too far trying to get your "moneys worth" if he is good and you only do 10 mins be prepared to stop rather than move on and risk having a set back.

I would expect in 2 weeks to have him walking and trotting independently and venturing out for little hacks in company if all goes well.

That hour could be used by picking each of his feet up, some desentising, lunging for 10mins, long reining for 10mins then ridden for 30mins, some desensitising walking over a tarp. it also makes it vsried for the horse

I would expect him to be out hacking fairly confidently, young horses usually come on really quickly once they realise what we are asking. Sounds like you are being really sensible getting some help.
