Hi all,

As title really, what sort of hair cut do I ask the pooch parlour to give her??!! Her hair matts very easily, I brush her if not daily every other day but she just resembles a mop even after shes been brushed *sigh*
She has just come into season too so Ill either have to wait for her to finish or get a mobile dog groomer/trimmer to come to the house...anyhoo here she is.....

Thanks in advance!

Awww, she's cute!

How much time do you want to spend brushing and sorting out hte hair? How often do you want to take her for hair cuts? If you're just wanting something easy to maintain, you could go for all off short style (3 3/4, 4F, 5F or super scalped with a 7F) and a face styled to blend.

Here's a cute wee cross that I do in a 4F on body and legs - owner needs easy to maintain. She's a Chin Cres x Papillon

Here's a shetland sheep dog by comparison, shaved to the wood with a 7F

I like teddy bear styles for those who want to brush in between / bring them often, but they're more to maintain so not recommended if you don't have time or inclination (or the dog prefers to be a mucky farm pup).

If you want I'll dig up a photo as a reference to show you.

I wouldn't necessarily tell someone they have to wait til bitch is out of season to bring to my salon (dogs don't run loose together and the entire dogs that we get don't get that fussed with a bitch on season being in the same room). Some groomers might, but I wouldn't. Either way, you might find that by the time you get an appt (this is a typically busy season) she'll be out of season anyway?

PS, also to say that I wouldn't normally advocate shaving off a sheltie coat (or any double coat for that matter!) but required in this instance

Thanks for the reply PnP!

Wow at the Shelties hair do, thats drastic!!

Jessie ( the dog) hates being brushed so I suppose easy to maintain hair do ....she moults alot too, she is 3/4 collie 1/4 welsh terrier so no need to make it a fancy haircut :P just something to keep her cool, less matted and no need to be brushed too often!!

There is a local dog grooming place, Ill give them a ring and see what they suggest. Do you know approx cost of cutting it all off?

Thanks :D

Go for the 'spaniel cut' lol.

My poochie ladies do a great job with my 2 spaniels and they always look fab! They cut the hair on the body fairly short and tail/legs/tummy they leave some 'feathers'. So not an all over buzz cut, but a little flowy in the right places and they look lovely.

Yes, a bit drastic on that trim on the shelty - but a requirement for that particular dog. ;)

Okay, she's got a double coat? From the picture it looked more like a tibetan terrier type coat, which would have suited that type of clipping. Maybe instead of clipping you could get them to hand scissor it wihtout cutting in to the under coat? Bath, blast out the dead stuff and use thinning scissors to give it some shaping. You might get away with that 2x a year when she's going thru a moult.

No idea on pricing - some are expensive and some are not. If she's the size of a border collie and doing what I suggested, I would be charging about £45ish. Edinburgh area can be pricier than many areas of the UK.
