What sort of horse could I get for £8k? Am I dreaming?

The thing is some horse may be advertised for higher price tags BUT are they selling? The odd one or two might but, just because the seller thinks it's worth that it doesn't mean someone will oay that for it. A lot of people really over-price horses and others are more realistic.

I would look at paying half that amount to be honest as the majority of horses should be able to jump up to 1m tracks easily enough so you are just talking about that little bit more competitiveness/ability and I just think £8K is A LOT! Hey, maybe I am just tight but I am one who looks for the temperament and willing to please sort of attitude from a horse. If you're a confident rider and you get a horse that wants to do stuff for you then you're laughing.

You could pay £8K-£10K for something that's been there, done it etcand is fantastic on paper BUT if you're not overly confident then it may not do the same for you. Now to buy a horse that would GENUINELY take you round xc/sj (as opposed to you having to do anything) then that will cost you more as I am not sure there's that many out there!!!

I know - but there is a BIG difference between being competitive at RC 90cm sort of heights and RC Open heights and then again between RC and aff. If you want something which is going to be competitive (by which I mean in the ribbons) at aff level then you will wipe the floor at RC (or at least you would in my area!) at those heights, and I still think it's achievable for £8K. If you want to do RC open and be competitive then that's a whole different ball game as I don't know anyone who does RC Open level who doesn't also do aff at a similar level - newcomers/BENovice, DR to elementary etc. And a horse which is competitive and a more schoolmaster type at those levels is worth a hell of a lot more than £8K as you are getting into the JRN market (for eventing at least).

So be clear about what level you want to be riding at - I thought you said you wanted to be competitive at 90cm or thereabouts - well then for £8K I think you could probably do it, but the horse won't be about to take you round RC Open and be competitive and a schoolmaster for that price too IMO!

best of luck with your search, I am certain you will find a very nice horse for 8k!

While he is below 16hh, my boy would do everything you ask. He would easily do BN or novice BE - I just don't have the time or money to affiliate. He has done consistently well at RC level, and at the RC shows I go to there is very few horses that can beat him when he's on form (we do the 90, 1m and 1.05 classes). He has hunted and novice evented before I bought him, aged 12, and I paid £3200 for him (6 years ago).
