I've been told that they keep the bit higher in the mouth and reduce bar pressure, although increase pressure on the nose and add some degree of poll pressure (though I can't quite see the physics for that). Similar-ish to a kineton really, though I think they are better used with either unjointed or lozenge/french link type mouthpieces than those with a single joint :)
