on examining my two horses yesterday, i have decided that they both need to put on a few pounds. One's a three year old TBX, the other's a 10 year old irish cob. They both have two feeds a day of one scoop hi fi, one scoop alfa a, 1/2 scoop sugar beet, general purpose supplement and garlic. They also have hay and live out all the time so pick at the grass when it starts to grow...I would like to feed them oil, what sort and how much

soya oil or linseed oil.
do not feed any more than 200ml per horse per meal, and ideally no more than 300ml per horse per day total

alternatively change your alfa a to alfa oil and up to 1 1/2 or 2 scoops!

corn oil between 2 and 3 tablespoons in each feed
could you not change the hi fi to a weight gain mix or something along them lines
also i would worry to much at this stage if they are slightly underweight due to the fact grass will be throw soon and then your have a problem keeping it off so it will do you some favers in the long run

i have heard linseed oil is very good

My friend is an equine nutrionalist (spl!?) She has worked for a couple of the BIG equine feed companies & says to use the cheapest oil you can buy & it does the same job as expensive oil!
